Factoring Polynomials

Math 8 Q1Wk1-2
Factoring Polynomials
Factors completely different types of polynomials:
Polynomials with common monomial factor
Difference of two squares,
Sum and difference of two cubes,
Perfect square trinomials
General Trinomials
Grade 9 Math Overview (DepEd)
Quarter Learner are able to..
Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
First Quarter quadratic equations, inequalities and functions,
and rational algebraic equations.
Second Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
Quarter variation and radicals.
Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
Third Quarter parallelograms
and triangle similarity.
Fourth Demonstrates understanding of the basic
Quarter concepts of trigonometry.
Polynomials with common monomial factor
Factoring is the reverse of multiplication:
3 (4) = 12; 12 is the product of 4 and 3;
therefore, the factors of 12 are 3 and 4
or 12 = 3 (4)
What are the factors of 15?
Polynomials with common monomial factor
Remember the multiplying polynomials by a
monomial?
Ex. 2x (3x + 1) = 2x(3x) + 2x(1) = 6x2 + 2x
Factoring polynomials with common factor is the
reverse of multiplying polynomials by a monomial.
Ex. 6x2 + 2x = 2x(3x) + 2x(1) = 2x (3x + 1)
What are the factors of x2 + 2x? 5x2 + 10x + 15?
Polynomials with common monomial factor
Exercises: Factor the following polynomials:
a. x2 - 3x

b. 2x2 + 10x - 4

c. 7x2 + 14x
Special Product: Difference of two squares
Remember (a-b)(a+b) = a2 - b2 (Product of the sum
and difference of two terms)
Therefore a2 - b2 = (a-b)(a+b) (Difference of two squares)

Example: 4a2 – 9 = (2a)2 – (3)2 = (2a – 3) (2a + 3)

Special Product: Difference of two squares
Exercises: Factor completely
a. a2 + 4a

b. b2 – 25

c. 3c2 + 6c + 9

d. 27bd2 – 3be2
Assignment:
Factor completely
a. 9a2 – 4

b. b2 – c2

c. 12d2 – 3e2
