Lesson: Physical Properties
Wa = Weight of air = 0
Ww = Weight of water
Ws = Weight of soil solid
Total weight of soil, W = Ww + Ws W = Total weight of soil mass
Volume of voids, Vv = Va + Vw
Total volume, V = Vv + Vs
Water content (w)
• Water content or moisture content of a soil is defined as the ratio of
weight of water to weight of solids (dry weight) of the soil mass.
w
• It is denoted by the letter symbol w and is commonly expressed as
percentage i.e. 20%, 50% etc.
• The minimum value of water content is 0.
• Generally fine grained soil have higher water content as compared
to coarse grained soil.
Lesson: Physical Properties
𝑉𝑣
e=
𝑉s
• Void ratio can be greater than 1, meaning the voids can be
larger than the solids.
• Size of void in coarse grained soil are generally larger than that
in fine grained soil.
Lesson: Physical Properties
𝑉𝑣
𝑛=
𝑉
• V= Vv + Vs , Vv = Vw + Va
• Porosity is usually expressed as a percentage and ranges from 0 to
100%, or as a decimal fraction from 0 to 1. It cannot exceed 100%.

Lesson: Physical Properties
• For a fully saturated soil mass Vv = Vw, hence for the saturated soil
mass S = 100% = 1.
• For fully dry soil Vw = 0 , hence for a fully dry soil mass S = 0% = 0.
• For partially saturated soil mass degree of saturation of soil mass
varies between 0 – 100%, which is most common condition in nature.

Lesson: Physical Properties
In its natural state, the soil has a volume of 0.33m³ and weighs
7.4 kN. The oven-dry weight of the soil is 6.8 kN. If the specific
gravity of the solid soil is 2.69, calculate the following:
e = 0.28 n = 0.22
w = 8.8%
