When working in a Microbiology Lab it is important to provide safe

working conditions and be aware of potential safety and biohazard risks.

01
Individuals must have proper training and protection when working in the laboratory.
Safety and Individuals need to follow the proper procedures and Standard Operation Procedures
(SOPs) to avoid accidents.

Health Each Microbiology Laboratory must have a Safety Manual and access to Safety Data

Precautions Sheet library.

The guidance document outlines proper Protective Equipment (PPE) and Health
Risks guidelines and requirements.

The lab must consult and be in compliance with the local EH&S team and policies.
People working in the microbiology laboratory should be qualified based on appropriate
education, training, and experience for the job.

02 Competency can be demonstrated through side-by-side testing or proficiency programs.

All technicians must be provided with regular ongoing training and all training should be
documented and records available.
People Training record templates that can be used and/or adapt to each laboratory needs our
available in the Food Micro Methods, SOP's and Support SharePoint site
and Training https://pepsico.sharepoint.com/teams/FoodMicrobiologyMethodsSOPsandSupport
GLP's are designed to protect both personnel and samples.

03 Each Microbiology Laboratory needs to have Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for
each test performed and have them available.

The laboratory specific methods should be based on the published accredited method.
Good Laboratory • Contact R&D Microbiology for further guidance.

Practices (GLP's)
Laboratory should develop and perform Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) self-
assessment once a month.

The document defines GLP's such as sample process flow

(handling/receiving/testing/storage/discard) and Environmental Monitoring in the
microbiology laboratory.
Laboratory shall have proper equipment, media and chemicals, consumables and glassware
to perform microbiological testing.

04 All equipment must have a documented preventive maintenance program.

The laboratory shall establish a calibration program for all equipment.

Equipment For new equipment installation, the lab must consult and be in compliance
with the local EH&S team and policies.
05
Proficiency Test A Proficiency Test Program Provides a Laboratory With:

A regular, independent, and objective means of assessing and

demonstrating the accuracy and validity of analytical data being
produced by the microbiology laboratory for routine testing.

The scheme may also verify methodology and provide a training and
education tool for microbiology laboratory staff.
