Scientists generally are engaged in collecting
experimental and statistical data and in analyzing
them mathematically.
Lawyers and judges generally are engaged in seeking
to apply the principles or analogies of cases, statutes,
and regulations to new situations.
Writers on jurisprudence are engaged in the
philosophical analysis of legal concepts and ideas.

Jurimetrics
Jurimetrics is the science of law or more
particularly, it is science of study of judicial
behaviour and analysis of justice
dispensation system.
The main aim of jurimetrics is to conduct
the measurement of the judicial decisions,
work, or judge’s behavior.
Jurimetrics is the science of judicial
behavior.

Jurimetrics
The term “jurimetrics” describes the use of scientific methodology
in legal enquiry.
A burgeoning/growing area of jurimetrics is the use of computer
technology for storing legal information in rapidly accessible
computer memory.
But jurimetrics is not confined to computing.
Perry Meyer examines data storage and retrieval, legal drafting and
textual ambiguities, analysis of complex evidence, prediction of
judgments and law reform and concludes that jurimetrics is an
incipient/initial revolution in legal enquiry which, sooner or later,
will shake legal education, legal research and legal practice to their
very foundations.
Whether it will come to fruition/completion within the current
generation, however, is another question.

Jurimetrics
Emerging factor- realistic movement which
does not give priority to laws enacted by the
legislative bodies but on the judge’s
understanding of the law, society, and their
psychology.
It is also focused on reducing human error
by applying computer technology and
symbolic logic in judicial reasoning as well
as, forecasting the expected legal outcomes.

Importance of Use of Jurimetrics
The main importance of the use of jurimetrics in the legal system are:
 To introduce mathematical, statistical and technology in the judicial
system to minimize error in the decision-making process.
 To construct the expert system in law.
 Time-saving and eradicating biases in decision-making.
 To get the authentic result from the investigations.
 The striking importance of jurimetrics comes while solving the criminal
cases, civil (medical negligence), and family cases, the cases related to
public planning or the cases related to the issues of the local governments.
 The vast range and huge accumulations of material relevant to the legal
process seemed to demand some kind of mechanical and mathematical
approach, if only towards information storage and retrieval.
 the complexity of modern statutory provisions with collateral
amendments, statutory instruments seemed to require more than
traditional methods to enshrine / expound their meaning.

Examples of Use of Jurimetrics
 Legal Expert System (LEX): Expert system i.e. computer programs which
are said to have the capacity to ‘reason’ and to ‘think’ like real experts.
 Tax Pro
 LEX Compose of:
1. A legal knowledge base
2. An inference engine, being its reasoning mechanism
3. A user interface
 Elements of LEX:
1. High-performance problem solvers
2. Built with the assistance of human experts
3. Operates in specific problem areas
4. Is not intended for use by laymen
5. Transparent i.e. explain lines of reasoning
6. Flexible (so many fields of choice)
