Assignment#5

• Model in HEC-HMS
Methodology
• Components:
• 1. Basin Model:
Create a New Project:
Open HEC-HMS and create a new project. Save it with an appropriate name and location.
Define Watershed:
Use the Watershed Model Editor to define the physical characteristics of the watershed, such as land use, soil types, and topography.
Specify Basin Parameters:
Define basin parameters like impervious area, slope, and other characteristics in the Basin Model Editor.
Create Sub-basins:
Divide the watershed into sub-basins based on different characteristics, using the Basin Model Editor.
Methodology
2.Meteorological Model:

Add Meteorological Stations:

Incorporate meteorological data by adding meteorological stations to the project.

Specify Precipitation and Temperature Data:

Input precipitation and temperature data for each meteorological station. You can use observed data or synthetic data depending on
availability.

3.Control Specification:

Define Control Specifications:

Specify control specifications such as time intervals and simulation options in the Control Specifications Editor.

4.Time Series Data:

Import Precipitation and Discharge Data:

Import time series data for precipitation and discharge from gauge stations. Use the Time Series Editor for this.
Methodology
5.Terrain Data:

Incorporate Terrain Data:

If available, include terrain data to improve the accuracy of the model. This may involve adding digital elevation models (DEMs) or other
relevant terrain information.

6. Computation:

Simulation Run:

Set Simulation Options:

Configure simulation options in the HMS model to define the simulation period, time step, and other relevant settings.

Run the Simulation:

Execute the simulation to compute hydrological responses based on the specified inputs. This step generates hydrographs and other output
data.
Methodology
7.Optimization Trials:

Adjust Model Parameters:

Conduct optimization trials by adjusting model parameters such as curve numbers, lag times, or other relevant parameters to improve
model performance.

Run Optimization Trials:

Run the model for each optimization trial and evaluate the results. Compare simulated hydrographs with observed data to determine the
effectiveness of parameter adjustments.

8.Results:

Review Simulation Results:

Examine simulation results, including hydrographs, flow duration curves, and other output data to assess the model's performance.

Evaluate Optimization Results:

Evaluate the results of the optimization trials to determine the set of parameters that best represent the observed hydrological behavior.
