Introduction to Optical
Fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand of glass or plastic that can
transmit data in the form of light over long distances. It is the backbone of
modern telecommunications, enabling high-speed internet, cable TV, and more.
History and Development
Optical fiber technology was first developed in the 1960s. Early fibers had high
signal loss, but through continuous research and innovation, the quality and
efficiency of optical fiber has steadily improved over the decades. Today, optical
fiber networks span the globe, connecting the world.

off the cladding layer.
Parts of Optical Fiber
Core: The central region of the fiber where light travels. It has a
higher refractive index than the cladding, which causes light to be
guided along the fiber.

Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index than
the core. It helps contain the light within the core by reflecting it back
into the core

Outer Jacket: Surrounds the entire fiber assembly and protects it from
environmental factors such as moisture, chemicals, and physical
damage.
