QUESTI
ONS : of column A?
1. How did you find the corresponding
statement

2. What have you noticed among the

statements formed? What do they have in
common?

3. What do we call these statements?

CONDITI

STATEME
NTS
OBJECTI
1. Define conditional statement.
VES:
2. Identify the hypothesis and
conclusion of an If-then statement.

3. Write a conditional statement given

the hypothesis and conclusion.
WHAT IS CONDITIONAL
STATEMENT ?
A conditional statement or if-
then statement is composed of two
clauses:
the if- clause and the then- clause.

We can denote a letter for each clause,

p for the if-clause and
q for the then-clause.
“If p, then q” or p q.
Conditional statements
are formed by joining two
statements p and q using
the words if and then.
The p clause is the hypothesis, and
q clause is the conclusion.
Hypothesis is the statement after
the word if . It is the given
information or the condition. It
indicates the person or object about
which something is said.
Conclusion is the statement
after the word then. It is the
result of the given information. It
all also shows what is being said
about the person or object in
the question.

If you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it,
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.

If you're happy and you know it, stomp your feet.

If you're happy and you know it, stomp your feet.

If you're happy and you know it, shout "Horray!"
If you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it,

If you're happy and you know it, do all three.

If you're happy and you know it, do all three.
If you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it,
If you're happy and you know it, do all three!
EXAMPLE:
Identify the hypothesis and conclusion of the
following conditional statement.

1. If Akizha is in Grade 8, then she is 14 years old.

hypothesis: Akizha is in Grade 8
conclusion: She is 14 years old

2. If 3x = 24, then x = 8
hypothesis: 3x = 24
conclusion: X = 8
3. You have a fever if your body temperature is
above 37.6⁰.
hypothesis: Your body temperature is above 37.6⁰
conclusion: You have a fever
4. A rhombus is a square if all its angles are right
angles.
hypothesis: All its angles are right angles
conclusion: Rhombus is a square
5. If it rains, then the sports fest will be cancelled.
hypothesis: It rains
conclusion: The sports fest will be cancelled.
KEEP PRACTICING!
Direction: Let p be the hypothesis and q be the
conclusion, write the conditional statement for
each of the following.

3. p: A number is divisible by 2.

5. p: You eat fruits and vegetables.

q: You are healthy.

If a shape is triangle, then it is

a polygon.

statement of the following illustration.
Example:

inside the Integers
conclusions.
