SECURITY IN-DEPTH
SECURITY AWARENESS
This training is an integral part of awareness.
Security Awareness and Common Sense
• The problem is that security professionals assume that the users should
exercise common sense;
• There is no such thing as common sense without a base common
knowledge; and
• Security programs fail, because they assume there is the common
knowledge
Think! HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW?
Remember KSD
In security profession and awareness, KSD is required.

Security Awareness is Implementing Security Culture

o Protection of lives and properties;

o Strict implementation of security policies. If not
exactly, but close enough;
o Security awareness is to get people to implement
secure practices into their daily activities;
o Security awareness is to strengthen security culture;
o Must instill common knowledge of concerns and base
actions; and
o Security is everybody’s business.
Why Security Awareness?
 The human factor
 Technology can only help so much
 Security Awareness programs are in integral part
of a mature security program
 Cost-Effective Solution
 Required by standards and regulations
Recognizing and Responding to
Unattended Packages, Objects
and Baggage
Suspicious Packages
Suspicious packages come in all shapes and
sizes. They could be boxes, envelopes,
backpacks, bags or other items, but are
usually left unattended and seem out of
place. Items could also be in your mail, giving
you a cause for concern if you are not
expecting a delivery. Suspicious packages
may contain harmful and dangerous
materials so it is important to understand
how to handle them with care.
For the purpose of awareness: Employees including
contractors personnel assigned at the Mall should recognize
the following as suspicious:
 Unattended item strange (weird/abnormal/unexpected);
 Unattended item out-of-the-way found where it is not readily
visible;
 Unattended item that matches something described in a
relayed threat;
 Unattended item that has visible wires, batteries, a clock or
timer, bottles, tanks or bags attached;
 Unattended item that is abandoned by someone quickly
leaving the area; and
 Unattended item emitting an odor, mist or oily liquid, or
leaking a powdery substance.
Other Suggested Things In Identifying a Suspicious
Package

 Packages misaddressed or sent to a generic title instead of

to someone in your household or office;
 Excessive stamp postage as opposed to metered postage;
 Odd markings such as “Personal”, “Confidential” or “Do
not x-ray”;
 A strange odor escaping the package;
 Unnecessary amounts of tape or string; and
 The package is rigid, bulky or beat up looking.
Responding
“If you see something, say and think
something”
REMEMBER: If it’s HOT, DON’T touch!

Hidden Object
Obviously Suspicious
Object placed in a Typical area
For non security employees should consider the
following guidelines for recognizing or responding to
suspicious unattended items:
 Do not touch an item that has been deemed suspicious;
 If in possession, do not use a radio or cell phone if an
explosive device is suspected. It is recommended that no
calls or transmissions be made within a distance of 300 feet
from the device;
 Find or approach a security personnel and notify the
discovery of said object; and
 Leave the area.
For security personnel should consider the following
guidelines for recognizing or responding to suspicious
unattended items:
 Do not touch an item that has been deemed suspicious;
 If in possession, do not use a radio or cell phone if an explosive device is
suspected. It is recommended that no calls or transmissions be made
within a distance of 300 feet from the device;
 Inform Superior Officer immediately observing appropriate channels and
provide complete details;
 If advised to cordon the area, do not allow entry thereof;
 Do not allow or accept assistance from someone except from
authorized law enforcement agency;
 Always wait direction and instruction from superior officer; and
 Be prepared to provide assistance and security to law enforcement
arriving on scene with descriptions of the object, the location of the
object, the suspicious nature of the object and, if applicable, a
description of any people associated with the object; and
 Activate ERT of the Mall base on EP particularly on traffic control.
Additional Suggested Actions If Found Suspicious Package

 If you are in a building, tell a security officer or building management for

their guidance;
 Do not move the package, bump or shake it. It is best to just leave it
where you found it;
 If the package is small, try to cover it with a trash can but make sure the
trash can is not touching the package. This will prevent whatever is in
the package from spreading;
 If the package is ticking, vibrating or has an odor, evacuate the area
immediately; and
 Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water if you handled
the package in any way. Stay in a separate area from others as the
package may contain chemical, biological or radiological materials that
could be spread.
HISTORY TELLS THE EFFECT OF TERRORISM
MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES

RECENT MINDANAO

For awareness
some actual parts/component of BOMB (IED)
Terrorism is, in the broadest sense, the use of
intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to
create terror among masses of people; or fear to
achieve a religious or political aim. It is used in this
regard primarily to refer to violence during peacetime
or in war against non-combatants (Wikipedia).

The government had the difficulty to resolve or combat the

terror groups thus help of the private sector is needed. Then
it can not be denied that the private sector particularly the
corporate world will surely affected if no help to the
government.
Thank you so much!
