 WHAT IS GREEN HOUSE EFFECT?
ENVIRONMENTAL
AUDIT
PRESENTED BY
AIRIN DAVID
 What is Environment?
Environment can be defined as a sum total of all the
living and non-living elements and their effects that
influence human life. While all living or biotic elements
are animals, plants, forests, fisheries, and birds, non-
living or abiotic elements include water, land, sunlight,
rocks, and air.
 How environment affects human life?
A number of specific environmental issues can
impede human health and wellness. These issues
include chemical pollution, air pollution, climate
change, disease-causing microbes, lack of
access to health care, poor infrastructure, and
poor water quality
 What is Audit?
Auditing is defined as the on-site verification
activity, such as inspection or examination, of
a process or quality system, to ensure
compliance to requirements. An audit can
apply to an entire organization or might be
specific to a function, process, or production
step.
What is environmental audit?
Environmental auditing is a systematic,
documented, periodic and objective process in
assessing an organization's activities and
services in relation to: Assessing compliance with
relevant statutory and internal requirements.
Facilitating management control of environmental
practices.
 A systematic, documented verification process of
objectively obtaining and evaluating evidence to
determine whether specified environmental activities,
events, conditions, management systems, or
information about these matters, conform with audit
criteria, and communicating the results of this
process to the client (General definition under ISO
(International Organization for Standardization) 14010)

 A systematic, documented verification process of

objectively obtaining and evaluating evidence to
determine whether an organization’s
EMS(Environmental Management System), confirm
with the EMS audit criteria, and communicating the
results of this process to the client (EMS audit as
defined in ISO 14011)
 RATIONALE
 To check that things are as they should be. Given
that your company must comply with relevant
environmental legislation and regulations, it is
obviously important that your organization checks
that it is actually in compliance. Only by auditing
will you discover instances of non-compliance and
be able to correct them.
 TO ANALYSE THE HARM
 WHAT ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN TO PROTECT
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
 What the organization in doing concerning to
the environment
 What activities are harming the environment
 Foundation of future planning
 Tool of assessment to verify whether
environmental standards are being followed or
NOT
 To find out the conformance of an EMS to a
standard
 To ensure that environmental policy works as
expected
 To estimate the operability and efficiency of an
EMS and find out improvement possibilities
 To increase the awareness and knowledge of
personnel
 THE COMPTROLLER AND AUDITOR GENERAL
OF INDIA is the supreme audit institution of
India, established under Article 148 of the
Constitution of India.
(frames auditing related norms and regulations)
 MAJOR AREAS OF ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT
 Regulatory Compliance
 Drinking Water Quality
 Green products
 Energy: An energy audit or assessment will illustrate
where building improvements can save energy and
water consumption, reduce greenhouse gases and save
money through more efficient energy use
 Best Practices: This includes the good things which
organization is doing for conservation of environment
and energy Waste :types of materials an organization
generates and how much of each type is recovered
through diversion programs or discarded
 Examples Use of eco ventilators for adequate air
change in sheds. There by reducing the power
requirements
 POLYCARBONATE SHEETS FOR
SHEDS IN FACTORY BUILDINGS
FOR NATURAL LIGHTING
 SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
• EA should provide answers to the following
questions raised by company managers :
– What are we doing? In particular, are we in compliance
with government regulations, guidelines, codes of
practice, permits conditions ?
– Can we do it better? In particular, are there non
regulated areas where operations can be improved to
minimize the impact on the environment ?
– Can we do it more cheaply ?
– What more should we do ?”
– It is also important to note that an EA cannot stand alone
and must be integrated in an overall management
system and must include dialogue between the plant
manager and people living in the vicinity.
 FOR A SUCEESFUL AUDIT

• Commitment and support of management

• Clear, suitable outlines

• Ensuring objectivity of auditors

• Proper organization of the personnel resources

Benefits of EA
• Facilitating comparison and interchange of information between operation or
plants,
• Increasing employee awareness of environmental policies and
responsibilities,
• Identifying cost-savings including those resulting from waste minimization,
• Evaluating training programmes and providing data to assist in training
personnel,
• Providing an information base for use in emergency response arrangements,
• Assuring an adequate, up-to-date environmental database for internal
management awareness and decision making in relation to plant
modifications, new plans, etc.,
• Enabling management to give credit for good environmental performance,
• Helping to assist relations with authorities by convincing them that complete
and effective audits are being undertaken, by informing them of the type of
procedure adopted,
• Facilitating the obtaining of insurance coverage for environmental impairment
liability.
