1. Suggest some ways in which the school head and
administrator, parents and the PTA can help the school
counsellor in carrying out his/her roles.
OBJECTIVE

some members of the community can be helpful to the
guidance officer in the implementation of the
guidance programme.

3. Identify some counseling roles of the school nurse.

4. State and explain some ways which NGO’s can

THE ROLES OF GUIDANCE FUNCTIONARIES
1. The Headmaster’s/ Administrator’s Role in Guidance and
Counseling Programme:

 To recognise and encourage the guidance programme in their


schools.
 To secure adequate number of competent counsellors for their
schools.
 To make sure that the roles of counsellors are defined and are able
to function in these roles.
 To provide (resource provider) physical facilities for the work of
counsellors e.g. office, furniture, tape recorders, etc.

 Referring students, staff and parents to the counsellor for help.


2. The Role of the Classroom Teacher:

 Serves on the school guidance


committee or appraisal committee
which may be directed by the counsellor.
 Encourages students to seek school
counsellors assistance as and when necessary.
 Listening to learners’ counselling needs and referring them to school
counsellor for counselling.
 Helps counsellors to study and diagnose the problems of students.
 Helps appraise students’ characteristics for purpose of adjustment and
placement under the supervision of the counsellor
3. The Roles of the School Nurse:
 Accepts referrals from both counsellors and
administrators.
 Treats sick students as individuals, offering appropriate
courtesy and respect.
 Sees urgent cases on the day of request.
 Arrange a dormitory visit if student is too ill to attend
hospital immediately.
 Ensures a system is in place at all times to contact an
appropriate health care professional in an emergency.
4. The Role of the District Guidance Coordinator:
 Organisation and development of guidance services in the 1st and 2nd
cycle institutions.
 See to professional matters of guidance and career development
programmes.
 Organisation of district in-service courses, workshops and seminars
for school coordinators.
 Development and promotion on career guidance and career
development programmes.
 Establishment of guidance and counselling projects in the educational
institutions.
5. The Roles of Parents:

 Providing social and emotional support for


their children or wards by giving and empathy.
 Assisting the counsellor to understand their children or wards.
 Referring their children or wards to the counsellor for help.
 Catering for the moral needs of their children or wards.
 Providing educational materials for their wards to facilitate their
academic development.
6. The Role of the communities:

 The communities are supposed to provide facilities (e.g. health needs,


library, recreation, etc.) that will promote development among
students.
 The establish scholarships, bursaries, etc., schemes for the students.
 The opinion leaders and professionals in the communities could assist
the school as resource persons.
 Providing financial support for guidance and counselling activities in
the school.
 Serve as a watch over students in the community schools.
7. The Role of the Parent/Teacher Association:

 Providing financial help to the guidance programme.

 Making their observations of students undesirable behaviours in the


community to the counsellor for necessary actions.
 Serving as a resource person and giving talks to students
(career talks, social-personal talks)
 Helping to link students to agencies, institutions and
organisations in the community.
8. The Role of NGO’s:

 They could serve as resource persons by giving talks to


students e.g. world Vision, PPAG, etc.
 They provide financial support to the students and schools.
 Offering internship and part time employment opportunity to
facilitate students’ career programme.

SUMMARY
 We discussed the roles of various
Guidance functionaries such as
teachers, parents, nurses, etc. in making
the future bright for younger people in
the school guidance programme.
