WATER AND WASTE SERVICING

A-318,A319,A321
By
M.K.Mishra
USE OF PORTABLE WATER
Potable water is stored in a tank capacity of 200
liters in an A321 airplane.

Potable water is mainly used in the lavatory, but

also for passengers' drinks (water, coffee, tea)
and even for showers in some first classes
WARNING
DO NOT DO WORK ON THE TOILET WASTE
SYSTEM AND THE POTABLE WATER SYSTEM AT
THE SAME TIME. THIS WILL PREVENT
CONTAMINATION OF THE POTABLE WATER
SYSTEM. SUCH CONTAMINATION CAN BE
DANGEROUS TO HEALTH.
BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON THE POTABLE WATER
SYSTEM, CLEAN YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND
WATER. THIS WILL PREVENT INFECTION.
(CONTAMINATION FROM TOILET WASTE IS
DANGEROUS TO HEALTH).
WARNING
THE WATER PRESSURE MUST NOT BE MORE
THAN 3.45 BARS (50.0 PSI) A PRESSURE MORE
THAN 3.45 BARS (50.0 PSI) CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
MAKE SURE THAT THE DRAIN VALVES STAY IN
THE DRAIN POSITION AFTER YOU DRAIN THE
POTABLE WATER SYSTEM IF:
– THE BLEED AIR SYSTEM IS OFF, AND
– THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 0 DEG.C
(32 DEG.F).
• THIS WILL PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE POTABLE
WATER SYSTEM.
CONTROL PANEL

POTABLE WATER SERVICE PANEL

The potable water service panel is installed in the rear left hand side of
the fuselage.
DOOR MICROSWITCH
The door micro switch isolates the indicating system
when the potable water service panel is closed.
QUANTITY INDICATOR
 The quantity indicator gives the level of the water in the potable
water tank.
FILL/DRAIN CONTROL HANDLE
 The fill/drain control handle is used to select a filling or
draining operation.
 FORWARD DRAIN VALVE OPEN LIGHT
 The forward drain valve open light comes on when the forward
drain valve is open. The light has a lamp press to test facility.
 TANK FULL LIGHT
 The tank full light comes on when the water tank is full. The
light has a lamp press to test facility.
 FILL AND DRAIN PORT : For filling and draining purpose
 WATER OVERFLOW: When the water tank is full it will
overflow through water Overflow port.
 GROUND PRESS: To Pressurized the Tank if aircraft is on
ground.
SERVICING PROCEDURE
Add Chlorine to the Potable Water
Chlorination is the process of adding chlorine to
drinking water to kill parasites, bacteria, and viruses.

(1) During the potable water servicing, you can also

add chlorine to the potable water.

(2) You can use an in-line water filter cartridge to

filter the potable water supplied to the A/C.
SERVICING PROCEDURE
 BEFORE YOU DO THE SERVICING OF THE POTABLE-WATER
TANK, MAKE SURE THAT THE QUANTITY INDICATION
SYSTEM IS ENERGIZED AND OPERATES CORRECTLY.
 IF IT IS NOT, YOU MUST SET THE CONTROL HANDLE TO
OPEN THE OVERFLOW VALVE. IF THIS VALVE IS NOT OPEN,
WATER CAN FLOW INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT
If the indication system does not operate
satisfactorily, do the servicing without electrical
power.

The "Overflow valve open" light on the serive panel

must be on when the overflow valve is opened.
SERVICING PROCEDURE

Connect the fill hose of the CART - SERVICING, WATER,

POTABLE or WATER SOURCE - GROUND to the POTABLE
WATER FILL AND DRAIN port.
On the service panel:
Turn the FILL/DRAIN handle to the PULL TO FILL position
Then pull it out to the mechanical stop.
AIRCRAFT LAVATORY SERVICE TRUCK DESIGN
• A lavatory service truck is a collection of components installed
over a truck chassis. It has two main tanks. One is the waste tank
that stores the waste drained from the aircraft. The other is the
flush tank that stores the disinfectant liquid (often referred to as
the blue water) used for rinsing the aircraft’s waste tank.
AIRCRAFT LAVATORY SERVICE TRUCK DESIGN
• Flush tank is installed with a pump used for pumping the blue water into the
aircraft’s waste tank for rinsing.
• Lavatory service trucks can also be equipped with an aerial platform, that
allows the operator to reach aircraft lavatory outlet because on larger aircrafts,
the outlet is not reachable without any aid.
• Some trucks also have a vacuum system installed with the waste tank that
allows faster suction to reduce service time.
• Some manufacturers also provide heaters in waste tank and flush tank to
avoid the liquids from getting frozen in extremely cold weather on airports that
experience sub-zero temperatures.
The Overall Aircraft Waste Disposal Process at Airports
AIRCRAFT LAVATORY SERVICE PROCEDURE HAS FOLLOWING MAIN STEPS:

• The operator drives the lavatory service truck to the aircraft

stand.
• He/She parks the truck with its back towards the aircraft because
that is where the drain hose and flush line can conveniently
connect with the aircraft lavatory servicing panel.
• He/She finally make the connection between the service truck’s
waste tank and aircraft lavatory servicing panel.
• First, the drain valve is opened that results in all of the collected
waste getting drained into the lavatory service truck’s waste tank.
• Secondly, the rinse connection may be used to clean and
disinfect the waste tank with aircraft lavatory fluid which is a
disinfectant fluid used to clean aircraft’s waste tank.
• The drain hose and rinsing hose are disconnected and secured
back in lavatory service truck.
• Lavatory service truck is removed from the aircraft stand.
