1. It is an infectious disorder
characterized by formation of boils in
ear canal..

Etiology& Risk factors


 Poor hygiene
 Obesity
 Malnutrition
 Weak immune system.
 Presence of scraps, abrasions and cuts.
 An ear piercing that becomes infected.
 Using dirty headphones or earbuds.

 Swimming in dirty water.
 Exposure to chemicals in hair products.
 Sharing headphones or earbuds used by
infected person.
 Infection of sweat glands inside ear.
 Ingrown hair.
 Foreign objects lodged in ear
CAUSATIVE AGENT
Boil is caused by bacterial infections including
streptococcus, staphylococcus species.
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common
causative agent. It may occur due to fungal
infection.
Pathophysiology

third of external auditory meatus

Mild or moderate pain in ear


Clinical manifestation
 Pain in ear (main symptom)
 Ear obstruction
 Discharge from ear
 Tenderness in ear
 Swelling in ear
 Temporary hearing loss
 Irritation
 Itching
 Colour of the center of lump is white or yellow.
 Temporary loss of hearing.
Management
 Nimesulide 100 mg BD.
 Instill ear drops.
 Apply antibiotic steroid cream.
 Warm compress.
 Manual draining of boil.
 Administer oral antibiotics such as
flucloxacillin.
 Administer analgesics to relieve pain .
 Abscess drainage by incision, if necessory
Prevention
 Keep ear canal clean and dry.
 Avoid cleaning of ear canal with cotton buds.
 Avoid shampoo or soap getting in ear.
 Avoid use of towel corners to dry water in
earbeacuase this further pushes things
towards inner side.
 Don't scratch ear canal with finger
