Physical and Chemical

Changes
By Mohona Ghosh
Changes around us
Rising of Sun
Melting of Candle
Inflating of Balloon
Moving of fan
Growth of Baby
Stretching of a Rubber Band
Mixing of baking soda and Calamine sol.
Flying a Kite
Killing a Chicken
Types Of Changes

•Physical Change
•Chemical Change
Physical Properties
•Properties Such as colour, shape,
size, state,density of substance is
called Physical Properties Of a
Substance
Physical Change
• The change in which only the physical properties
of a substance changes is called a physical
change in a physical change the chemical
composition of a substance does not change and
no new substance is formed
EXAMPLES
• Cutting a paper into small pieces is a physical change because only the
shape and size of the paper changes so no new substances is formed
• Crushing of chalk () is a physical change because only the shape and size
changes where as the chemical composition remain same and no new
substances is formed
• Melting of any substance is a physical change only the physical state shape
and size changes no new substances is formed
• Heating is a physical change because the metal expands and becomes red
hot change in chemical composition the changing the physical Shapes and
colour
• Dissolving sugar/ salt in water is a physical change as the size of the sugar
Characteristics
• In a physical change only the physical property changes like shape size
and colour etc.
• Most of the physical changes are reversible and temporary in nature.
• There is no change in chemical composition of a substance.
• There is no change in energy takes place in physical change.
• Five signs of physical change are change in shape or size, change in
state, change in color, change in texture, and change in solubility.
Chemical Properties
• The properties related to chemical composition
of a substance are chemical properties. Chemical
properties describe the characteristic ability of a
substance to react to form new substances; they
include its flammability and susceptibility to
corrosion. All samples of a pure substance have
the same chemical and physical propertie
Chemical Change
• A chemical change is a change of materials into another, new
materials with different properties and one or more than one new
substances are formed. It results when a substance combines with
another to form a new substance
• The change in which there is a change in the chemical composition of
a substance is called a chemical change. One or more substances are
formed in a chemical change and the chemical composition of a
substance changes. The process which takes place during a chemical
change is called the chemical reaction
Examples
• 1. Burning of any substance is a chemical change because during burning process
, a substance combines with oxygen and forms new substances such as CO2, H2O
vapor along with heat and light.
• 2. Neutralization is a chemical change because we get new substances likesalt,
water along with heat.
• 3. Rusting of iron is a chemical change because iron undergoes rusting and forms
a new substance that is rust (FezO3.xH2O).
• 4. Formation of curd from milk ,when curd is formed, the chemical composition
of milk change , therefore, it is a chemical change.
• 5. Digestion of food, since complex food is broken down into simpler substances
and the chemical composition of the food changes, therefore, it is a chemical
change.
Characteristics
Along with the formation of new substance, a chemical change maybe
accompanied by any one of the following changes:
• Energy in the form of heat , light or any other form of radiation maybe given
out or absorbed.
• Sound may be produced during a chemical change.
• A change of smell may take place or a new odour may be given out
• .A gas may be evolved.
• There may be change in colour.
• A chemical change is mostly irreversible in nature, therefore, they
arepermanent changes.
• During a chemical change ,a new substance is formed, which hasentirely
