Testing & Inspection

TENSILE TESTING FOR 3mm & UNDER
Cut three transverse pieces 40mm wide

Prepare the specimen thus

Fracture clear of the weld confirms a
satisfactory weld. 65 Parallel
When fracture occurs in the weld or at the Application of load
weld junctions a minimum ultimate stress
value for the metal may be stipulated,
calculated in the cross-sectional area at ‘x - x’
The IZOD Test
Graduated quadrant
Loose Pointer
The pendulum is released to hit
Release Trigger the specimen, breaking it at the
notch.
Pendulum The pointer indicates the distance
that the pendulum travels after
hitting the specimen.
Specimen Notch From this the toughness of the
weld may be calculated.

Load indicator

The loading is usually 3000 Kg

Test piece
Indentation as seen through
microscopic eyepiece

The diameter of the indentation a 10mm steel ball makes at a

predetermined load is converted on a scale to a hardness number.
Soft metals have numbers below 100
Hard metals have hardness numbers below 500
