WHAT’S MALWARE?

Malware is any software intentionally designed to cause disruption to a computer, server,


client, or computer network, leak private information, gain unauthorized access to
information or systems, deprive users access to information or which unknowingly interferes
with the user's computer security and privacy.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF MALWARE
• COMPUTER VIRUS- Infects computer files and programs.
• WORMS- Eats up computer memory.
• TROJAN HORSE- Program that appears useful but is harmful.
• SPYWARE- Spies on confidential and sensitive information.
• RANSOMWARE- Threatens to publicise data unless a ransom is paid.
• PHISHING- Sends unwanted emails to trick a person into giving sensitive Information.
• ADWARE- Makes computer browsing slower.

• A COMPUTER VIRUS is a type of malicious software, that spreads in the computer and
aims to disrupt systems and result in data loss and leakage.
COMMON TYPES VIRUS
• Some common types of viruses include-
• BOOT SECTOR VIRUS- Infect the boot sector or the partition table of a disk.
• MACRO VIRUS- Written in the same language used to create software like Excel or Word.
• MEMORY RESIDENT VIRUS- Resides in the memory of an application, even after its been terminated.
• FILE INFECTOR VIRUS- Damages files and copies them into another program where they can be hacked.
• MULTIPARTITE VIRUS- Quick virus that affects both the files and boot sector using file or boot infectors.
HOW TO PREVENT AN ATTACK?
• Install a trusted antivirus and antispyware software like McAfee or Norton.
• Perform 1 full system scan every month.
• Regularly take backup of your data in other storage devices.
• Install a firewall program.
• Don’t download or open any attached link or file from any un-verified sources.
