2D and 3D Shapes

Pg 151, 152
2D SHAPES
2D shapes are flat
shapes that have only
two dimensions –
length and width

Examples of 2D
shapes are square,
circle, triangle,
rectangle etc..
RECTANGL
A rectangle is a four-sided shape with E My Characteristics:
• 4 sides
2 sets of parallel lines. • 4 corners (or vertices)
• Opposite sides are equal in
length
• All angles are right angles (90
degrees)
SQUAR My Characteristics:
A square is a special type of
rectangle where all four sides
E • 4 sides
• 4 corners (or vertices)
are equal in length. • All sides are equal in length
• All angles are right angles (90
degrees)
CIRCL
A circle is a round E My Characteristics:
• No sides or corners
shape with no • All points on the edge are
corners or edges. equidistant from the center
TRIANGLE
A triangle is a three-sided My Characteristics:
• 3 sides
polygon with three straight
• 3 corners
sides and three angles.
• Sum of angles is always 18
degrees
3D SHAPES
Three-dimensional (3D) shapes are
objects that have three dimensions -
length, width, and height.

Unlike 2D shapes which are flat, 3D

shapes have volume.

Vertices: Points where edges meet.

Edges: The line segments where faces meet.
Faces: Flat surfaces of the shape.
Volume: The amount of space occupied by the shape.
Surface Area: The total area of all the faces of the
shape.
CUBOID
A cuboid is a 3D shape with six rectangular faces.

Properties: 8 vertices
12 edges
CUBE
A cube is a special type of cuboid where all sides are equal.

Properties: 8 vertices
12 edges
CYLINDE
A cylinder has two circular faces and one curved surface.
R
Properties: 2 circular faces
1 curved face
0 vertices
CONE
A cone has a circular base and a curved surface tapering to a point.
Properties: 1 circular face
1 curved face
1 vertices
SPHERE
A sphere is perfectly round in shape, like a ball.

Properties: 0 faces
0 vertices
