Stratigraphic Framework

Widespread shale markers having characteristic

resistivity log profiles define the primary bounding
surfaces between successive genetic stratigraphic
units. These shale markers represent surfaces of
maximum marine flooding

Several large intraformational unconformities evident

on seismic data also divide the Queen City-Wilcox
succession and are important sequence boundaries
within the stratigraphic framework

Depositional Systems Analysis
Methodology of Depositional Systems
Analysis

Modern depositional processes

Almost all bed-load (or traction current)

transport processes deposit continuous sand
trends that define the pathways of the modern
sediment-dispersal system (Galloway and
Hobday, 1983)
Wave-action and
longshore transport

Texas Gulf Coast has

Constructing lithofacies maps

Constructing the gross-sandstone map of a

genetic stratigraphic unit is the first step in
interpreting the sediment-dispersal pathways

Constructing lithofacies map set

In addition to distinctive sand-body

geometries, modern depositional systems also
have characteristic internal architectures that
can be observed in cores, cuts, or sections

Methodology of Depositional Systems
Analysis

Constructing lithofacies map set

Internal architecture of ancient depositional

systems can be interpreted from well-log
response. Thus, constructing a log-facies map
of a genetic stratigraphic unit can define trends
in areal patterns of bedding architecture of the
ancient depositional system

Methodology of Depositional Systems
Analysis

Constructing lithofacies map set

Therefore, the basic lithofacies map set must

include gross sandstone and log facies maps
that enable us to define the characteristics of
the depositional systems and their sediment-
dispersal patterns

Comparison with modern analog

Comparing ancient sediment-dispersal
patterns with modern analogs leads to an
understanding of the physical processes
that controlled deposition, providing a
powerful guide for predicting the geometry
and distribution of framework sandstones
in exploration areas where there are no
wells

Petrophysical Rock Properties
Petrophysical Rock Properties

Petrophysical analysis was conducted on 188

wells within the play area to provide basic rock
properties of porosity, water saturation, shale
volume and permeability within the Queen City
and Wilcox reservoirs

Cut-off values for pay were porosity, water

saturation and shale volume of 0.13, 0.70 and
0.40, respectively.
Petrophysical Rock Properties

Rock properties were compared to well test

and production performance in all reservoirs
and wells that were under-performing with
respect to their petrophysical characteristics
were identified

Mapping regional reservoir-quality rock

distribution as well as delineating under-
performing areas was fundamental in
identifying opportunities for resource growth
Petrophysical comparison of producing and non-producing zones
shows no obvious difference in reservoir quality indicating potential for
recompletion.

Integration and Lead Identification
Lead Identification

Prediction of regional sandstone distribution,

refinement of structural maps and field-scale
petrophysical analysis performed on
available logs and cores were combined with
production data

Integration and analysis of these data

resulted in the identification of new
opportunities in the Wilcox and Queen City
reservoirs
Lead Identification

The Play Group identified 64 leads with remaining potential

in the Wilcox and Queen City reservoirs

The lead concepts vary from:

Conclusions
Results and Conclusions of the Play
Analysis

Primary products of the play analysis are a

regional stratigraphic and structural framework
within which, reservoir sandstone distribution
and structure contours were mapped for the
Wilcox 1 & 4 and Queen City 3 & 5 reservoirs

Production and test data and petrophysical

characteristics were also investigated and
integrated with the regional geologic framework to
determine rock quality and gas deliverability of the
principal reservoir units
Results and Conclusions of the Play
Analysis

More importantly, as a result of the play analysis

the Group identified numerous opportunities, or
leads, for new exploration, field extension and
reserves growth from existing fields

These opportunities are arranged in a portfolio of

64 leads that catalogs.
catalogs the resources available and
provides a guide for efficient planning and
deployment of future exploration and
development activities.
Results and Conclusions of the Play
Analysis

A companion study by Scotia Group

evaluated the resources associated with the
64 leads identified in the play analysis

The risk-adjusted recoverable resource for all

leads is estimated at 3.08 Tcf at P50 level: 0.883
Tcf in Wilcox reservoirs 2.197 Tcf in Queen City
reservoirs
