Social learning Theory

 Social Learning Theory proposed by Albert

Bandura in 1977

 The theory considered the importance of

observing, modeling and imitating the
behavior attitudes and emotional reactions
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY OF ALBERT
BANDURA

 Humans learn socially, not just intellectually.

 Humans think about the relationship between their behavior and

consequences.

 Modeling occurs when the behaviors of others are observed and

imitated.

 Rewards and punishments directly influence learning

PEOPLE CAN LEARN THROUGH
OBSERVATION

Observational Methods

 Observational learning is Individuals who learn and adopt

behaviors through observing. It’s a crucial area of social
learning.

 This learning theory illustrates the famous Bobo Doll

experiment
Bobo Doll Experiment
BASIC MODELS OF OBSERVATIONAL
LEARNING
Individuals who are observed by coping with the behavior of someone else are called model

A Live Model Observing an actual individual demonstrating a behavior.

A Symbolic Model Real or fiction characters performing behaviors in books,

in films, television or media.

A Verbal Instruction Which involves descriptions and explanations of behavior.

Model
KEY FACTORS OF SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY

Attention
If people are learning anything from a model, they must be paying
attention to the model’s observable learning behaviors. The model must
capture the observer’s interest and the model’s behavior should be
wroth to imitate.

Retention
For successful imitation, the learner should be able to store information
to pull up later and act on its observational learning.

…..

Motor Reproduction
This is the ability to perform the behavior you observed. But this is not always
possible, our physical ability limits us.

Motivation
Finally, for observational learning to be successful you have to be motivated to
imitate the behavior. Positive reinforcement and punishment impact motivation.
Reinforcement and punishment play an important role in motivation.

Ex. In the classroom, if a student sees another student rewarded with extra credits for doing a
physical task, the other student might start to show up. Similarly, if the child knew that the other
child was punished for making a mistake, he would avoid that mistake in his task.

HOW TO INCORPORATE SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY IN THE CLASS
ROOM

 Understanding the cognitive process and human behavior can

enable to design of more effective teaching strategies.

 Teachers can model healthy behaviors, as children are more likely

to mimic the actions of significant adults in their lives.

 Educators have the power to shape behavior by encouraging

positive reinforcement to build self-efficacy.
