Core beliefs

Negative experience in Childhood would lead to negative views about themselves,

people and world

To identify corebelief, supervision is required for trainee therapists.

● Assumptions are also made in childhood. A rule of living you learn to protect your self
from corebeliefs.
“If I make a mistake, I will be complete failure” , “ I should be able to cope well”

● Spotting CB or assumption throughout the formulation. It evolves the picture of a

person’s difficulties.
● Identify beliefs using the downward arrow technique
SLIDESMANIA
Downward Arrow technique

● Read pg 150-151

● Whats so bad about that?

● What does that mean about me?
● What would be so difficult about that?
● What does this mean about other people?
● What does this mean about the world?

● It is not always possible to get the right beliefs instantly. It needs gentle
work and exploration. So have patience with client and yourself
SLIDESMANIA
Identify beliefs using imagery
● pg #153
● It is important that client make sense of images
that they are having for any issue. Image can be
on thought level or deeper level.
● Read all questions
different ones to explore are:
● What is going through your mind in the image ?
● Does the image remind you of something earlier
on in life?
● If so how old were you ? What was happening?
What does it say about you now?
