The English Language

English was introduced to Jamaica with the arrival of the

British in the late 15th century. Jamaica was colonized by
the Spanish in 1494, but the British took control of the
island in 1655. With the establishment of British rule,
English became the dominant language of administration,
commerce, education, and culture. Over time, English
gradually replaced Spanish as the primary language
spoken on the island. Today, Jamaican English, influenced
by African languages, Jamaican Patois, and other
linguistic influences, is widely spoken in Jamaica
alongside standard English.
