Historical Background:
The Vedas, Puranas, Ayurveda, Yoga, Kautilya's Arthasahtra are only some of the milestones that the traditional Indian knowledge system boasts of. There are evidences of imparting formal education in ancient India under the Gurukul system. Under the Gurukul system, young boys who were passing through the Brahmacharya stage of life had to stay at the ashram or the teacher's home and complete their education.

Present Condition of Education in India :


According to the 2001 census,
The total literacy rate in India is 65.38%. The female literacy rate is only 54.16%. The gap between rural and urban literacy rate is also very significant in India. This is evident from the fact that only 59.4% of rural population are literate as against 80. 3% urban population. 2003 census shows 60% literacy rate in India.

The higher education system in India comprise of more than,


17000 colleges, 20 central universities, 217 State Universities, 106 Deemed to Universities and 13 institutes of National importance.

This number will soon inflate as the setting up of 30 more central universities, 8 new IITs, 7 IIMs and 5 new Indian Institutes of Science are now proposed.

Present education system:

The present education system includes 4 level of education as follows:

i. Primary education ii. Secondary education iii.Higher secondary education iv. Higher education

1. Primary education Primary Education consists of eight years of education Primary education must cover the following subjects: english, mathematics, science, history, geography, art and drawing, music and physical education. 2. Secondary education Secondary education consists three year of education that is 8,9,10. In some state it consist two years of education 3. Higher secondary education It also consist two year of education i.e. 11&12 4. Higher education Higher education in india starts after passing the higher secondary education or the 12th standard. Depending on the stream, doing graduation in india can take three to five years. Post graduate courses are generally of two to three years of duration. After completing post graduation, scope for doing research in various educational institutes also remains open.

Technical education in India:


The courses, which are known as 'technical' in India are - degree and diploma courses in Engineering, Master degree Courses in Engineering, Master of Computer Application (MCA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Pharmacy Courses, Courses in Architecture and Applied Arts and Hotel Management and Catering Technology Courses. The number of AICTE approved institutes that offer engineering degree courses in India is - 4,39,689. There are around 1244 institutes in India that offer diploma courses in engineering, 415 institutes offer diploma courses in Pharmacy, 63 institutes offer diploma courses in Hotel Management and Catering Technology Courses and 25 AICTE approved institutes that offer diploma courses in Architecture.

Women's education in India has also been a major preoccupation of both the government and civil society as educated women can play a very important role in the development of the country. Importance of Women's Education in India: Women's education in India plays a very important role in the overall development of the country. It not only helps in the development of half of the human resources, but in improving the quality of life at home and outside. Educated women not only tend to promote education of their girl children, but also can provide better guidance to all their children.

Facilities for International Students in India:


all over the country offer different courses for the international students. International students can apply for medical courses, engineering courses, applied arts courses etc. The government has reserved some seats for foreign students and students from other developing countries.
