What is Vmware?

VMware is a California based company founded in 1998 that

specializes in providing a platform for the virtualization of IT
infrastructure. The company is known worldwide for the
vSphere VMware Hypervisor which enables the virtualization of
practically any x86 or x64 architecture. Since 1998, VMware’s growth
has been unprecedented. It was acquired by EMC in 2004 (EMC was
acquired by Dell in 2016), and since these acquisitions, many more
products have been added to the VMware inventory. VMware now has
a major presence in private data centers, cloud management services,
virtualized storage and networking, as well as desktop software.

MSI INVOLVEMENT :
The Problem
 Overwhelming complexity
 >70% of IT budgets just to keep the
lights on
 <30% of IT budgets goes to
innovation and competitive advantage

How Do I Get 10x Productivity On My Servers?

Physical World Virtualized World

Traditional x86 Architecture Virtualization:

• Legacy rule: Run only one • New rule: Run multiple
application per server because applications per server because
single application crashes result in OS/applications are isolated from
OS or server failure one another
• Typical hardware utilization under 8% • Typical hardware utilization 80%
Without VMware
Single components
require:
• Power
• Cooling
• Space
• Setup
• Configuration
• Management
• Support
With VMware

What is VMware vSphere?
vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi)
Description:
the hypervisor software that allows for many virtual machines to be run on
a single physical machine
VMware ESXi
vCenter Server
Description

VMware vCenter Server provides centralized management of vSphere virtual

infrastructure. IT administrators can ensure security and availability, simplify day-to-day
tasks, and reduce the complexity of managing virtual infrastructure

Benefit :
• Reduce management complexity and time taken for large scale
deployments
• Enable vSphere Core Feature (HA, DRS, vMotion, DPM, FT)
• Extend virtualization capabilities using third-party ecosystem
solutions.

vSphere Core Features
vSphere vMotion

Description:
Enables the live migration of virtual machines
from one host to another with continuous service
availability.

Benefits:
• Revolutionary technology that is the basis for
automated virtual machine movement
• Meets service level and performance goals
vSphere Storage vMotion
Description
Live migration of virtual disks from one storage
location to another without disruption to users

Benefits
Minimizes the need to schedule application
downtime due to storage maintenance,
upgrades, or migration
vSphere High Availability

Description:
Enables the high availability of virtual

X
machines by restarting them on a different
vSphere host in the event of a failure

Benefits:
Resource Pool
• Minimizes downtime and IT service
disruption
• Reduce cost and complexity compared
to traditional clustering

vSphere Fault Tolerant
Description
Provides zero-downtime and zero-data-loss
continuous availability in the case of hardware
failures

Benefits
• Eliminates even the smallest of disruptions
in the event of hardware failures
• Simple to set up
• Can be used with any application
vSphere Distributed Resource
Scheduler (DRS)
Description:
Dynamically allocates and balances virtual
machines to guarantee optimal access to
resources.
Benefits:
 Align resources to meet business goals Resource Pool

 Increase system administrator productivity

 Automate hardware maintenance
 Minimizes power consumption while
guaranteeing service levels (DPM)

VMware Converter
Description

Scalable enterprise-class migration tool that reduces the time that IT managers spend
converting physical machines to VMware virtual machines, VMware Converter
enables remote conversions without disrupting the source server during the conversion
process.
Network
 vSphere Standard switch
vSphere Standard Switch is used to provide network connectivity for hosts,
virtual machines and to handle VMKernel Traffic. Standard switch works with
only with one ESXi host.

 vSphere Distributed switch

vSphere Distributed switch allows a single virtual switch to connect multiple
Esxi hosts. vSphere Distributed switch on a datacenter to handle the networking
configuration of multiple hosts at a time from a central place.
Network Topology
Datastore
 Datastores in VMware vSphere are storage containers for files. They could be located on
a local server hard drive or across the network on a SAN. Datastores hide the specifics of
each storage device and provide a uniform model for storing virtual machine files.
 Datastores are used to hold virtual machine files, templates, and ISO images. They can be
formatted with VMFS(Virtual Machine File System, a clustered file system from
VMware), or with a file system native to the storage provider (in the case of a NAS/NFS
device).

Site Recovery Manager (SRM)
Description:

VMware provides their own disaster recovery solution named as Site Recovery Manager

(SRM). Site Recovery Manager is an automation software that integrates with an underlying

replication technology to provide policy-based management.

Benefit:
 AUTOMATED TESTING WITH NO DISRUPTIONS and Eliminate “DR Testing Weekend”
 Changes of IP addressing to provide for failover
 PROTECT ANY VIRTUALIZED APPS with Array-Based Replication Product Support
 ONE-CLICK RECOVERY with Centralized Recovery Plans in Minutes
 Prioritization of VM startup based on available resources
