Week6 Day 1 Types of Chemical Reaction
Week6 Day 1 Types of Chemical Reaction
CHEMICAL
REACTION
4TH QUARTER WEEK 6
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING
COMPETENCY
Apply the principles of
conservation of mass to
chemical reactions
OBJECTIVES
This lesson aims to help you understand the different types
of chemical reactions. Furthermore, you are expected to:
1. cite
instances wherein chemical reactions are observed;
2. identify
and describe the different types of chemical reactions;
3. predict
the product/s and balance each given combination reaction;
and 4. appreciate the
existence of the different types of chemical reaction around
us.
RECAP
Directions: Balance the following chemical equation by supplying the coefficient on
the space provided.
3
1. N2 + ____ H2 2
____ NH3
2 3
2
2 2. ____
2 KClO3
____2 KCl + ____ O2 2
2 2
3. ____ NaCl + F2 ____ NaF + Cl2
Types of Chemical Reaction
1. Synthesis or Combination Reaction
A reaction in which two or more reactants combine to form a
single product is known as a combination reaction.
Synthesis or Combination Reaction
It takes the form of
A + B → AB
Example 1 ;
2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl
Example 2 ;
NH3 + HCl → NH4Cl
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction in which a
single compound breaks
down into two or more
simpler compounds or
products
AB → A + B
Example 1 ;
2 H2O2 → 2H2O + O2
Example 2
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
Single Displacement /Replacement
Reaction
A chemical reaction in which a
more reactive element displaces a
less reactive element from its
aqueous salt solution
AB + X → AX + B
Example 1 ;
2 HCl+Zn → ZnCl2 +H2
Example 2
Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu
Double Displacement Reaction
This involves
exchanging of ions
to form a new
compound
Double Displacement Reaction
It is also called a
metathesis reaction
Double Displacement Reaction
It takes the form of
AB + XY → AX +
Example 1 ;
BY
BaCl2 + Na2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2NaCl
Example 2 ;
KBr + AgNO3 → KNO3 + AgBr
Neutralization Reaction
A neutralization reaction can be
defined as a chemical reaction in
which an acid and base
quantitatively react together to
form a salt and water as products.
In a neutralization reaction, there
is a combination of H+ ions and
OH– ions which form water.
A neutralization reaction is Neutralization Reaction
generally an acid-base Examples: • Formation of
neutralization reaction. Sodium Chloride (Common
Salt): HCl + NaOH → NaCl +
H2O
Combustion Reaction
a reaction in which a
substance reacts with
oxygen gas, releasing
energy in the form of light
and heat.
Combustion reactions must
involve O2 as one reactant.
The combustion of
hydrogen gas produces
water vapor:
Combustion Reaction
All combustion reactions
fall into the pattern:
fuel + O2 CO2 + H2O
The coefficients of the
balanced equation will
change depending on the
fuel.
The fuel can be almost
anything including methane
(CH4), propane (C3H8),
butane (C4H10), octane
(C8H18) or sugar
(C6H12O6)
ASSESSMENT
Activity 1: What’s My Type?
Directions: Determine the type of chemical reaction on the following chemical equations.
