STRESS WHAT IT IS …….
 Often termed as twentieth century syndrome, born out of
man’s race towards modern progress and its ensuing
complexities - Bejamin Franklin
 Pressure experienced by a person in response to life
demands. These demands referred to as stressors; include a
range of life events, physical factors, environmental
conditions and personal thoughts
STRESS WHAT IT IS
 Process of adjusting to or dealing with the circumstances that
disrupt or threaten to disrupt a persons physical or psychological
functioning
 Tension, Strain or Pressure from a situation that requires us to
use, adapt or develop new coping skills
 The Wear and Tear our minds and bodies experience, as we
attempt to cope with our continually changing environment
 S = P>R i.e. Stress occurs when Pressure is greater than the
Resources.
STRESSORS
Stimuli proceeding or precipitating a change. It may
be internal (Fear, Guilt) or external (trauma, peer
pressure etc.)
STRESSORS - SOURCES
 Internal stressors : originate within a person e.g. ailment,
feelings of depression
 External stressors : originates outside the individual e.g. moving
to a new city, death in a family
 Developmental stressors : occurs at a predictable times
throughout an individuals life e. g. Child – Beginning of school
 Situational Stressors : Unpredictable and occur any time of life.
It may be positive or negative - marriage / divorce/separation
STRESS - INDICATORS
 Physiological Indicators
The physiological signs and symptoms of stress result from
activation sympathetic and neuro-endocrine systems of body e.g.
Sweat production increase, Dry mouth, Less urine, Heart rate etc
 Psychological Indicators
Anxiety , fear, depression, anger and unconscious ego defense
mechanism
 Cognitive Indicators
Problem solving, Arranging or manipulating a situation, self-
control, day dreaming, suppression.

 Stress can have a big impact on your body, that are felt by
you and the world can see
 By- product of stress is weight gain or loss of appetite
which is a problem.
