Contents:-

• Introduction
• Project Objectives
• Working Principle
• Advantages and Disadvantages
• Application and Uses
Introductions:-

oIntroduction to Conveyor systems.

oIntroduction to the Geneva mechanisms.
oThe role of 3D printing in modern manufacturing.
Conveyor Belt System:-
o A conveyor belt system is a mechanical apparatus consisting of a continuous loop
of material (the belt) that moves between two or more pulleys, with the primary
purpose of transporting objects from one location to another.

o Components:-
 Belt
 Rollers
 Motor
 Frame
Geneva mechanism:-
• The Geneva mechanism is a type of indexing mechanism used to convert
continuous rotational motion into intermittent rotary motion.

• Components :-
 Drive wheel with a pin
 Geneva wheel with slots
3D printing technology:-
oAdditive manufacturing process.
 Slicing the models.
 Setting up the 3D printer.
 Printing the components.

oType of 3D printer:- Fused Deposition

Modeling(FDM)

oMaterial:- Polylactic Acid(PLA)

Design process:-
• Software:- Solid Works

• Design steps:-
Creating the conveyor belt model.
 Designing the Geneva mecahanism.
 Intigrating both system.
Project Objectives:-

oDesign a conveyor belt system with a Geneva

mechanism.
oUtilize 3D printing for the construction.
oTest and demonstrate the functionality.
Working principle:-
• When the electrical supply is given to DC motor, shaft of the motor tends to rotate.

• The rollers shaft is coupled with the Geneva drive. The Geneva drives shaft is coupled with the motor
shaft hence when power is supplied to the motor rollers rotate with a certain time delay according to
the Geneva drive and the belt moves along the rollers.

• Thus material handling is carried out. Conveyor is used for carrying the objects from one end to
another end.
Advantages and Disadvantages
 Advantages :-
• Precise Indexing:-This makes it ideal for situations where products need to be positioned accurately,
such as assembly lines feeding machines or packaging lines.
• Energy Saving:-This can lead to significant energy savings, especially in applications where the belt
doesn't need to be constantly moving.
• Cost-Effective:- The Geneva mechanism itself is a relatively simple design with few parts. This
translates to lower manufacturing costs compared to more complex conveyor belt mechanisms.
• Simple Control:-The start-stop motion of the Geneva mechanism conveyor can be easily controlled by
adjusting the motor speed or the design of the Geneva wheel (number of slots). This allows for easy
integration and synchronization with other automated processes.
Advantages and Disadvantages
 Disadvantages:-

• Very difficult to change timing once design is choosen

• Limited number of dwells from 3 to 18 per rotation
• Higher speeds can lead to increased wear and tear
• Due to intermittent nature of the of the Geneva drive, the conveyor can
experience jerky start and stops
Applications:-
• It is applicable in the production industries and in automobile industries for
mass production.
• Modern film projectors may also use an electronically controlled indexing
mechanism or stepper motor, which allows for fast-forwarding the film.
• Geneva wheels having the form of the driven wheel were also used in
mechanical watches, but not in a drive, rather to limit the tension of the
spring, such that it would operate only in the range where its elastic force is
nearly linear.
• Indexing tables in assembly lines, tool changers for CNC machines, and so on.
