WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

 Air pollution occurs when gases, dust particles,

fumes (or smoke) or odour are introduced into
the atmosphere in a way
that makes it harmful to humans, animals
and plant. This is because the air becomes
dirty.
ABSTRACT
 In today’s world, due to the fast growth in the number of motor
vehicles and industrial evolution, the surrounding environment is more polluted.
The pollution majorly affects the quality of air and causes major health issues to
living beings. The major reason for atmosphere contamination is due to the
release of harmful gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide etc. from factories,
vehicles and from combustion of fossil fuels. It is necessary to monitor the
percentage of pollutants present in the air which will lead to environmental
issues. To overcome this, we have designed a prototype using IoT technology. The
air pollution monitoring tool includes a Microcontroller and Sensors that provides
the provision to monitor the quality of air by detecting the harmful gases present
in the atmosphere. The pollution level can be monitored remotely using PC or
smartphones. The data is stored in the cloud and can be accessed remotely.

NodeMCU

1.Node MCU stands for Node Microcontroller Unit. The term "NodeMCU"
strictly speaking refers to the firmware rather than the associated development
kits.

2. NodeMCU is an open source firmware for which open source prototyping

board designs are available .

3.This board is used to develop the programming of microcontrollers and be a

part of Internet Of Things(IOT)
4. NodeMCU connects to the sensors for measuring temperature,
humidity, concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), ozone gas.

5. It has a wireless WIFI transreceiver of operating frequency range

2400-2484 MHz

SPECIFICATIONS: Microcontroller – ESP-8266

model : Amica
Size: 49mm x26mm
Clock speed:80MHz
Operating voltage: 5v
Pins:30
RAM:128 KB
Flash memory:4MB
MQ135(Air Pollution Sensor)

1.Air pollution sensors are devices that monitor the

presence of air pollution in the surrounding area.

2. They can be used for both indoor and outdoor

environments.

3. Although there are various types of air

pollution sensors, and some are specialized in certain aspects, the majority focuses on
five components: ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and
nitrous oxide.

4.These are used in quality control equipment's for buildings/offices, is suitable for
detecting Benzene, smoke, CO2
SPECIFICATIONS:
1. size :35mm x22mm x 23mm
2. working voltage :5v DC
3. Fast response
4. Wide detection scope
5. stable and long life
6. Dual signal output
16x2 LCD Display

An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is an electronic display

module and has a wide range of applications.

A 16x2 LCD means it can display 16 characters per line and there
are 2 such lines. In this LCD each character is displayed in a 5x7 pixel
matrix.

This LCD has two registers, namely, Command register and Data
register.
Breadboard

A breadboard, or protoboard, is a construction base

for prototyping of electronics.

Because of the solderless board is reusable easily

and also make it easy to use for creating temporary
prototypes and experimenting with circuit design

A variety of electronic systems may be prototyped

by using breadboards, from small analog and digital
circuits to complete central processing units (CPUs).
I2C Adapter
The I2C Module has an inbuilt PCF8574 I2C chip that
converts I2C serial data to parallel data for the LCD display.

These modules are currently supplied with a default I2C

address of either 0x27 or 0x3F.

If there are 3 sets of pads labeled A0, A1, & A2 then the
default address will be 0x3F

If there are no pads the default address will be 0x27.

AURDINO IDE
The Arduino Integrated Development Environment - or
Arduino Software (IDE) - contains a text editor for writing
code, a message area, a text console, a toolbar with
buttons for common functions and a series of menus. It
connects to the Arduino hardware to upload programs
and communicate with them.

The board is equipped with sets of digital and analog

input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various
expansion boards (shields) and other circuits.

Programs written using Arduino Software (IDE) are

called sketches. These sketches are written in the text
editor and are saved with the file extension .ino.
Thingspeak cloud platform

 ThingSpeak has integrated support from the numerical computing

software MATLAB from MathWorks, allowing ThingSpeak users to
analyse and visualize uploaded data using MATLAB without requiring the
purchase of a MATLAB license from MathWorks.
Jump wires
 A jump wire (also known as jumper, jumper wire, jumper
cable, DuPont wire or cable) is an electrical wire, or group
of them in a cable, with a connector or pin at each end (or
sometimes without them – simply "tinned"), which is
normally used to interconnect the components of a
breadboard or other prototype or test circuit, internally or
with other equipment or components, without soldering.

 Individual jump wires are fitted by inserting their "end

connectors" into the slots provided in a breadboard, the
header connector of a circuit board, or a piece of test
equipment.
WORKING

 The IoT-based air pollution monitoring system is developed

using sensors and microcontrollers.
 A sensor network to collect data on air quality is created. The
microcontrollers are programmed to take the sensors as input and
transmit the data to the cloud.
 An algorithm is developed to analyze the data and send it to the Mobile
application or an IoT dashboard .
 And the out put is displayed on LCD display and also in the thingspeak
cloud platform.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
ADVANTAGES
 Detecting a wide range of gases including alcohol , benzene ,
smoke ,CO2,CO.
 Quality of air can be checked indoor as well as outdoor.
 Continuous update of change in percentage of quality.
 Visual output
 Operating voltage is 5volts
 Real time system
Applications
 Indoor air quality monitoring system
 Outdoor air quality monitoring system
 Particulate matter monitoring
 Gas detection
 Alcohol detection
FUTURE SCOPE
 By adding the different sensors to the project we can monitor
the some extra gases.
 Example: By adding the MQ7 sensor we can monitor the Carbon
Monoxide gas.
 By adding the MQ5 sensor we can monitor the Flammable
gases like LPG , CNG.
CONCLUSION

As we observed that they are so many effects because of air pollution . So

we have to know how much of air pollution in our living area so, we
designed a prototype called “IOT BASED AIR POLLUTION MONITORING
SYSTEM” the prototype works as a air pollution level indicator that we
know how much of pollution in our surrounding area has.
