OUTPUT DEVICES

DEFINITION OF OUTPUT

• “Data that has been processed into useful form”

OR
• “Any information processed by and sent out from a computer is called data”
DEFINITION OF OUTPUT DEVICES
• Output Devices are hardware devices that displays or present information to the user or other
people. Output Device lets a computer to communicate with you.
• In other words, The devices which are used to display the data to the user either
in the form of hardcopy or softcopy are called output devices.
TYPES OF OUTPUT
1. Hardcopy Output
2. Softcopy Output
HARDCOPY OUTPUT
• The output printed on paper is called Hardcopy Output.
• Produced on a paper or some material that can be touched and carried
for being shown to others.
• Permanent in nature and can be kept in paper files or can be looks at a
later time when the person is not using the computer.
SOFTCOPY OUTPUT
• The Output Shown on Display screen is called Softcopy Output.
• A softcopy is the unprinted digital document file.
• It can usually be viewed through an appropriate editing program, such
as word processing program, database programs etc.
TYPES OF OUTPUT DEVICES
• Display Devices
• Printers
• Sound Devices
• Projection Devices
• Other Devices
DISPLAY DEVICES
1. Monitors

. CRT Monitor
. LED Monitor
. LCD Monitor
2. Glass Plasma Display
MONITOR
• Monitors are the most crucial output devices of
a computer. Without it, the computer is
incomplete. The monitor is a versatile
device of the computer for the visual display of
all types of information.
• The monitor is designed to display symbolic and
graphical information. It shows all the data and
information as Soft Copy on its screen. It acts as
an interface between the CPU and the user.
• Types of Monitor:
1. CRT Monitor
2. LED Monitor
3. LCD Monitor
CRT MONITOR
• CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) Monitor is a basically vaccum
tube with a electron gun and a fluorescent screen.
• A coating of red , green , and blue are used to form
images in the form of light emitted from the fluorescent
screen
LED MONITOR
• A LED monitor is a flat panel display that uses an array of Light emitting diodes as pixels
for a video display. It was developed by James P.Mitchell in 1977.
An LED consists of many closed –spaces LEDs and by varying the brightness of each
LED, the diodes jointly form an image on the display.
LCD MONITOR
• LCD monitor isa type of panel display which uses liquid crystals its primary form of
operation .The LCD is made several layers including a polarized filter and electrodes. When
the backlight is activated , it produces light that is somewhat obstructed by the liquid crystals
.And this obstruction creates an images on the screen
GAS PLASMA DISPLAY
• A type of thin display screen , called a flat panel display used in some older portable
computer.A gas-plasma display works by sandwiching neon gas between two plates. Each
Plates is coated with a conductive point.
PRINTER
• An output device that produces text and graphics on a
physical medium such as paper or transparency film.
• Types of printer are
1. Non-Impact Printer
2. Impact Printer
3. Ink-Jet printer
4. Laser Printer
5. Mobile Printer
IMPACT PRINTER
• An impact printer is one that operates by striking a printing head (made up of metal or
plastic) against an ink ribbon.
• Its characteristics are:
1. Exceptionally Low consumable cost.
2. Quite Noisy
3. To create an image, there is physical contact with the paper
CHARACTER PRINTER
• Characters Printer are the printer which has the ability to print only one character at a time .
It is also of two types:
1. Dot Matrix Printer: This type of Printer can print alphanumeric characters, special
characters, charts , and graphs. They can print only in black or white while some dot
matrix printers can print in both format .It is used for printing in application like payroll ,
accounting etc.
2. Daisy Wheel Printer :These types of printers are generally used for word processing in
offices that require a few letters to be sent here and there with very nice quality.

LINE PRINTER
• Line Printer is a printer that have the capability to print one line at a time. It is also of two
types:
1. Drum Printer : It is a type of line printer that uses a rotating drum with raised character,
against which the paper is pressed . Its character cannot font cannot be changed.
2. Chain Printer : A line printer where a chain of character set is used is called chain printer.
Its character font can easily be changed . It is less expensive than drum printer

NON-IMPACT PRINTER
• Non-Impact printers creates pictures ,characters and figures without any uninterrupted
contact between the printing device and the paper.
• Features are:
• Produce Both black and white color
• Speed measure in pages per minutes(ppm)
• Much quieter than impact printers
INKJET PRINTER
• An inkjet printer is a type of non impact printer that forms character and graphics by
spraying tiny drops of liquid ink into a piece of paper. Inkjet Printers have become a popular
type of color printer for use in the home.
LASER PRINTER
• Laser Printer uses Laser light for producing dots which will produce character on the page.
MOBILE PRINTER
• A mobile printer is portable type of printer that allows a user to print from a laptop, mobiles,
or handheld computer.
• Mobile printer are much smaller.
• It is also referred as mobile printer.
SOUND DEVICES
• Sound Devices includes:
1. Speaker
2. Headphone
3. Sound Card
SPEAKER
• Speaker are devices that produce sound after getting a command from a computer. It is of
two types:
1. Wired Speaker : Wired Speaker is a speaker which is connected to a computer through a
USB or with a audio jack.
2. Wireless Speaker : A speaker which is generally connected with a computer through
Bluetooth or by using adapter driver.
HEADPHONE
• Headphone ,also called earphone is a hardware output device that connects to a computer
line out or speaker port or wirelessly with Bluetooth . It allows us to listen to audio or watch
a movie without disturbing people around us.
