THE FUTURE

Will - Be going to
Future
Will - Action decided at the moment of speaking

“I’m bored… I know! I

will study on the
English Online
platform!”
Future
Will – To volunteer

“You’re in no condition to
drive. I’ll call an Uber.”
Future
Will – To Make Promisses

I’ll wait for you to

return, forever.”
Future
Be going to – Talk about actions that
were previously decided.

“I’m going
gonnato drink 100
cups of coffee.”
Read the following Dialogue and Act out
the scene with your partner!
ROSE: I love you, Jack.
JACK: No...don’t say your goodbyes, Rose. Don’t you give up.
Don’t do it.
ROSE: I’m so cold.
JACK: You’re going to get out of this...you’re going to go on and you’re going to
make babies and watch them grow and you’re going to die an old lady, warm in
your bed. Not here...Not this night. Do you understand me?
ROSE: I can’t feel my body.

JACK: Rose, listen to me. Winning that ticket was the best thing that ever
happened to me. It brought me to you. And I’m thankful, Rose. I’m thankful. You
must do me this honor...promise me you will survive....that you will never give
up...not matter what happens...no matter how hopeless...promise me now, and
never let go of that promise.
ROSE: I promise.
JACK: Never let go.

ROSE: I promise. I will never let go, Jack. I’ll never

let go.
Future
He’s gonna drink
that whole bottle
of whiskey.

He’s not gonna

study this
weekend.
He’ll have a
hangover
tomorrow.

He probably
won’t graduate
college.
Making predictions

We can use both “will” and “be going to” for making
predictions.
EXAMPLE:
Bolivia will win the next world cup
Bolivia is going to win the next world cup
“I’m going to play a concert and smash
my guitar. Then I’m going to destroy my
hotel room.”

Rock Star
Take a card. This is you. Describe your
future plans.
Partners guess who you are.

Rock Star
IN GROUPS OF 3-4
Student #1: You won a vacation around the world
for 6 months, and you can take 1 other student
with you.

Students #2-4: You want to go! Make promises to

convince student #1 to take you.

I’ll be your
horse, and I’ll never tell
you can ride you to stop
on my back! drinking!
IN GROUPS OF 3-4

Student #1 chooses the winner.

The winner is now student #1.

Repeat!

I’ll be your
horse, and I’ll never tell
you can ride you to stop
on my back! drinking!
Making promises
Your significant other said they will break up with you
unless you change your behavior.
Promise them all the ways you’re going to change.
Make silly predictions about the year 2000.
Choose the best one and share it with the class.
We’ll vote on which one is the best.
EXAMPLE:
In the year 2000, Sebastian Davalos will be
elected President, and he will end corruption
in Chile.

and what you are going to do in that situation.

WRITE YOUR OWN RESOLUTIONS
• For the year OR for this semester!

• For example:
– I will work more.
– I will work by a schedule.
