Lesson 5: Different Spreadsheet Programs

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

1. familiarize with the most commonly used functions in
Microsoft Excel;
2. use several conditional functions available in Microsoft
Excel; and
3. use Microsoft Excel as a viable tool in market research and
product development.
What is a spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet is a computer program that can

capture, display and manipulate data arranged in
rows and columns. Spreadsheets are one of the
most popular tools available with personal
computers.
What is a spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet is generally designed to hold numerical

data and short text strings. In a spreadsheet program,
spaces that hold items of data are called spreadsheet
cells. These can be renamed to better reflect the data
they hold and can be cross-referenced through row
numbers and column letters.
What is a spreadsheet?

• A single spreadsheet can be used as a worksheet

to compile data for a purpose, or multiple sheets
can be combined to create an entire workbook.
What is a spreadsheet?

• Each column or row cell references a value and is

labeled according to its placement (for example:
A1, A2, A3). Data can be exported as a CSV file
and imported into other software or vice versa.
Examples of Spreadsheet Softwares

• Google Sheets
Google Sheets is an online spreadsheet app that lets
you create and format spreadsheets and work with
other people.
Examples of Spreadsheet Softwares
LibreOffice Calc
• is the spreadsheet component of the LibreOffice software package.
After forking from OpenOffice.org in 2010, LibreOffice Calc
underwent a massive re-work of external reference handling to fix
many defects in formula calculations involving external references,
and to boost data caching performance, especially when referencing
large data ranges.
Examples of Spreadsheet Softwares
•Microsoft Excel is a software program
produced by Microsoft that allows users
to organize, format and calculate data
with formulas using a spreadsheet
system.
Examples of Spreadsheet Softwares

• This software is part of the Microsoft Office suite and

is compatible with other applications in the Office
suite. Like other Microsoft Office products, Microsoft
Excel can now be purchased through the cloud on a
subscription basis through Office 365.
What is Microsoft Excel?
• Microsoft Excel provides an automated way of
displaying any statistical data. It can be used to
automatically compute for several factors that are not
easy to notice especially when faced by a large data.
Microsoft Excel includes several arithmetic and basic
functions that help you compute faster.
Basic Excel Formulas:
• Addition (+)
• Subtraction (-)
• Multiplication (*)
• Division (/)
• *type <=>
• before the formula, thus: =a1+a2
Basic Excel Formulas:

• Average – a function used to compute for the

average of the number of a range.
• COUNTIF – a function used to count the cells
with a specified content within a range.
Basic Excel Formulas:

• SUMIF – a function used to compute for the

summation of a range if a certain condition is
met
• AVERAGEIF – a function used to compute for the
average of a range if a certain condition is met
