Chapter 2 - Art and the Culture
• Art and Culture nourished for long historical and pre-historical period
of time.
• Long period of time Values, culture are remain and maintaining its
existence and also handed overed to next generation.
• During 200-300 A.D – Vatsyayana – Studied book Shastras – Wrote
famous book Kamasutra – 64 type of art forms.
• Painting has been ranked 4th place – Art with six limbs of painting
named Shadangas.
• Pandit Yashodhar’s annotation ‘Jai Mangala’

Six Limbs of Art

Roop Bhed Praman Bhav Lavanyayojna Sadrishya Varnika Bhang

• Roop Bhed – Capability to differentiate scenes/Object observed by the artist.


• Praman – Proportion or exact ratio.
• Bhav – Expression
• Lavanyayojana – Grace of painting or knowledge of beauty.
• Sadrishya – Actuality/Reality of the sight scene.
• Varnika Bhang – Colour variation/Combination of colors makes a painting attractive and
perfect.

No picture or painting can be perfect unless artist uses all these six aspects.

regarded as the founder of painting.

Out of them oldest fresco is of 10000 B.C.
