ROCKS

WHAT ARE ROCKS

Any natural mass of mineral matter that makes up the earth's
crust is called a rock. Rocks can be of different colour, size and
texture . They are very useful to us . The hard rocks are you used to
making roads ,houses and buildings.
TYPES OF ROCKS
There are three major types of rocks.
1st igneous rocks
2nd sedimentary rocks
3rd metamorphic rocks
THE IGNEOUS ROCKS
They are formed , when the molten magma. Cools and becomes solid . These igneous
rocks are also known as the primary or the basic rocks.

There are two types of igneous rocks - Intrusive Rocks

Extrusive rocks
An intrusive igneous rock is formed when is down deep inside the earth's crust. Eg-
granite. Since ,they cool down slowly they form large grains like granite.

an extrusive igneous rock is formed from molten magma coming from the interior of the
earth on its surface , rapidly cools down and becomes solid. They have a very fine grain
structure e.g. basalt. The Deccan plateau is an example of the basalt rock.
INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCKS EXTRUSIVE
IGNEOUS ROCKS
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
the transported and deposited small fragmented rock by wind , water , etc. forms sediments . These lose
sediments are compressed and hardened to form layers of rocks which are called sedimentary rocks.

The rocks contains fossils of dead plants, animals and other micro-organisms.
or Examples, sandstones is made from grain of sand.
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
When igneous and sedimentary rocks are in extreme heat and pressure they form a very new rock known as the
Metamorphic Rocks.
For Example-clay changes into slate
limestone changes into marble.
ROCK CYCLE
One type of rock changes to another type certain
conditions in a cyclic manner.
This process of transformation of the rock from one
to another is called rock cycle.
ROCK CYCLE (CONTINUE)
The rock cycle is a web of processes that
outlines how each of the three major rock
types—igneous, metamorphic, and
sedimentary—form and break down based on
the different applications of heat and pressure
over time. For example, sedimentary rock
shale becomes slate when heat and pressure
are added.
