MATHtuto: Who am I ?
The union of two sets A and B , written 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵, is the
set which consists of all elements that belong either to
A or to B or to both A and B . 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 is formed by
putting all elements of A and B together.
Given:
T = {2, 4, 6, 8} and R = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8}
1. T ∪ R {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}

MATHtuto: Who am I ?
The intersection of two sets A and B , written 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵, is
the set of all elements common to sets A and B .
Thus 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 is the set of elements found in both A and
B.
Given:
T = {2,4, 6, 8} and R = {1,2, 3, 4, 5,
6,1. T7,∩ R 8}

If you are given these sets:
Set A = {1,2,3,4,5}; Set B = {2,4,6}; Set C = {1,3,6}
Find:
1. A ∩ B = {2, 4}
2. B ∪ C {1, 2, 3, 4, 6}
=
3 . A ∪ B ∪ C = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
4. (A ∪ B) ∩ (B ∪ C) {1, 2, 3, 4, 6}
= {1, 2, 3, 4}
5. A ∩ (B ∪ C)
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
1. Describe and define the complement of a set, and difference of
two sets.
2. Find the complement of a given set and the difference of two
sets.
3. Appreciate the importance of complement of a set and difference
of two sets in real-life situation.

How to Find the Difference of S e t s ?
Let's look at an example to understand how to find
the difference of two sets A and B .
Consider the two sets
A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B = {3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 9}
A – B = {1, 2 , 3 , 4 , 5} – {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9}
To find the difference A - B of these two sets, strike off all the elements that are present in both A and B.
The set of elements which belong to A but not to B.
A - B is the set of elements from A that are left. Thus,

How to Find the Difference of S e t s ?
Let's look at an example to understand how to find
the difference of two sets A and B .
Consider the two sets
A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B = {3, 4, 5, 6,

B – A = {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9} –
To find the difference B – A of these two sets, strike off all the elements that are present in both B and A.
The set of elements which belong to A but not to B.
B - A is the set of elements from B
that are left. Thus,
