This course would help you to be a computer savvy; which means,
knowing what computers can do and what they can’t
knowing how one can benefit or get harmed
knowing when one can solve computer problems and when to ask for help
Also will help you make better buying decisions by identifying the different computer components, and
knowing the quality and usefulness of each component.
This course is a prerequisite to the following courses
1. Programming Techniques – 1st year 2nd semester

Introduction
What is a computer?
A computer is a programmable electronic device that accept data — raw facts and figures — as input,
processes these data to produce information as output — such as summaries, totals, or reports — which is to
be displayed or stored and then retrieved for future use.
An information system is a combination of people, procedures, software, hardware, data, and the Internet.
An Information System (IS) collects & processes data, and stores, analyze,
and disseminates information for a specific purpose.
An effective information system provides users with accurate, timely, and
relevant information.
Poor organization and maintenance of data in an organization’s information
system leads to poor information, which leads to poor decisions.

Computer System Basic Components (1 of 8)
The basic components of a computer system are:
People
Software
Hardware
Database
Network
Procedures

Computer System Basic Components (3 of 8)
Software:
•Software is another name for programs – in most cases these terms are interchangeable
•Programs are instructions that tell the computer hardware components how to process data into the form you want
•They must be developed carefully and tested thoroughly.
•Two major kinds of software: System and Application
• System software – used by the computer
• Application software – software used by the end user
19
Computer System Basic Components (4 of 8)
Software:
• System software – used by the computer
Software that enables application software to interact with the computer hardware.
Background software helps manage resources.
Collection of system programs including:
Operating Systems.
Coordinates computer resources.
Provides the user interface.
Runs applications.
• Two best known Operating systems are:
• Windows 10
• Apple’s Mac OS
Utilities.
• Performs tasks related to managing computer resources
• Most essential utility program is antivirus program to protect your system from viruses (Key term) or malicious
programs that can damage your software or hardware as well as compromise the security and privacy or your
personal data.
20
Computer System Basic Components (5 of 8)
Software:
• Application software – software the end user (you) use
• Three types of application software
• General-Purpose applications - general purpose or “off-the-shelf” programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel,
Access and PowerPoint
• Specialized application - narrow focus on specific disciplines and occupations, such as graphics and Web
authoring
• Mobile Apps – or apps – designed for mobile devices or tablets for social networking, games, music, and
video
21
Computer System Basic Components (6 of 8)
Hardware:
It is a set of devices such as processor, monitor, keyboard, and printer.
Together, they accept data and information, process, and display them
They must be reliable and capable of handling the expected workload.
Database:
22
Computer System Basic Components (7 of 8)
Network:
It is a connection system that permits the sharing of resources by
different computers.
Procedures:
They are the set of instructions about how to combine the above
components in order to process information and generate the desired
output.
