MIDSEGMENT THEOREM
OF TRAPEZOID
Objectives:

1. Define the Midsegment Theorem of Trapezoid and

2. Solve problems using Midsegment Theorem of Trapezoid and;

Let us recall!!!

MIDLINE THEOREM
The segment that joints the
midpoints of two sides of a triangle
is parallel to the third side and half
as long.
Let’s do this activity!!!
Procedures:
1. Locate the midpoint of IM and label it as point C.
2. Locate the midpoint of NS and label it as point F.
3. Connect the points C and F with a line.
4. Measure the length of the bases, IN and MS.
5. Add the lengths of the bases, IN and MS and then divide by two.
6. Measure the length of CF.
Questions
1. What are the midpoints of IM and NS?
2. Measure the two bases, IN and MS; what did you find?
3. Add the lengths of the bases, IN and MS and then divide by two.
What is the answer?
4. Measure the length of CF; how long is it?
5. Compare the half of the sum of the bases to the length of CF.
What did you find?
MIDSEGMENT THEOREM OF TRAPEZOID

The median of trapezoid is parallel to

each base and its length is one half the
sum of the lengths of the bases.
What is Trapezoid?
It is a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of
parallel sides.
 The parallel sides are called bases.

Base  The non-parallel sides are called

F > B
legs.
Leg Base Leg
 The base angles of a trapezoid are
Angles
consecutive angles whose
G > C common side is a base of the
Base
trapezoid.
Example One
Given: ABCD with median MN.
What is the measure of median MN?

4 CM
A B
(AB + CD)
?
M N

8 CM
D C
MN = 6 CM
Example Two

Given: ABCD with

median MN. 1. If AB = 40 cm and CD = 70 cm,
what is the length of MN?
A B 2. If AB = 15 cm and CD 23 cm,
what is the length of MN?
L
M N 3. If CD = 30 cm and MN = 20 cm,
what is AB?
4. If AB = 15 cm and MN = 25 cm,
D C what is CD?
If AB = 18 cm and CD = 22 cm, What is the measure of MN?

Given: ABCD with Solution : or

median MN. b1 + b2
M= 2
18
A B 18 + 22
(18 + 22) MN =
2
? 40
M N
(40) MN =
2
D C MN = 20 cm MN = 20 cm

If MN = y + 4, AB = 10 and DC = 14, what is the value of y?

Given: ABCD with Solution :

median MN.

10
A B
1 (10 + 14)
y+4= y + 4 = 12
y+4 2
M N
1 y = 12 – 4
y+4= (24)
2 y=8
D C

If AB = x - 6, MN = 8 and CD = 12, what is the value of x and AB?

Given: ABCD with Find the value of x. Find the length of

median MN. Solution : AB.
Solution :
A x – 6 (cm) B 1 (x – 6 + 12 ) AB = x – 6
8=
2
AB = 10 – 6
8 cm 16 = x – 6 + 12
M N AB = 4 cm

16 + 6 - 12 = x
D C
12 cm 10 = x
x = 10
Let’s evaluate!

1. If MN = 15 cm and CD = 20 cm, what

median MN.
2. If AB = 25 cm and CD 45 cm, what is
A B the length of MN?
3. If AM = 5 cm, what is DM?
M N
4. If CD = 75 cm and MN = 55 cm,
what is AB?
