IDENTIFYING HAZARD AND RISK IN THE WORKPLACE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a.) Differentiate the hazard and risk;
b.) Identify and explain the different hazards that can be seen in the workplace;
c.) Establish and recognize contingency measures to maintain safety at work; and
d.) Value the importance of identifying hazards and risk in the workplace
WHAT IS HAZARD?
● A workplace hazard is anything that has the potential
to cause harm to a person.
WHAT IS RISK?
● Is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a
hazard.
TYPES OF WORKPLACE HAZARD

● CHEMICAL HAZARDS

● BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS

● ERGONOMIC HAZARDS

● PHYSICAL HAZARDS

● PSYCHOLOGICAL HAZARDS
1. CHEMICAL HAZARDS
- Solid, liquid, vapor or gaseous substances, dust, frume or
mist.
Examples: pesticides, paint, disinfectants

Some of the Effects of Chemical hazards:


• Allergic reactions
• Asthma or respiratory system irritation
• poisoning
2. BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS
- Caused by organisms such as viruses, bacteria,
fungi and parasites.
Examples: blood body fluids, Airborne pathogens such as the
common cold

Common Effects of Biological Hazards:


• Blood-borne diseases including HIV, hepatitis B and C, and
malaria
• Infections
• Skin and respiratory system irritation
3. ERGONOMIC HAZARDS
- This is usually a result of physical factors that can result in
musculoskeletal injuries.

Examples: performing tasks that require lifting heavy loads,


too much bending and reaching,standing for long periods
Some of the Effects of Ergonomic hazards:
• soreness or pain (aching or sharp) in the back, hands, arms,
wrists, elbows, neck, and shoulders
• Stiffness
• Swelling
4. PHYSICAL HAZARDS
- This hazard is associated with the environmental factors
that are harmful to an
employee without necessarily touching them.

Examples: spills on the floor, electricity, loud noise

Some of the Effects of Physical hazards:


• Serious injuries
• Fire
5. PSYCHOLOGICAL HAZARDS
- Those are basically causing stress to a worker. General
wellbeing will affected.

Examples: Bully, harassment, abuse, negative feedback of co-


workers
Some of the Effects of Psychological hazards:
• Loss of concentration at work
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Loss of confidence
