Coastal ErosionWhat is it and how does it affect us?

Coastal erosion is the process by which local sea level rise, strong wave
action, and coastal flooding wear down or carry away rocks, soils, and/or
sands along the coast.

It is known to have environmental risks for humans and animals alike and
economical impact due to property damage.
The intersection of
land and sea
Coastal areas are nutrient-rich and support diverse marine life.
The coast is constantly changing due to the rising and falling of tides, so
the term coastal zone is often used to describe where land influences the
ocean and vice versa.
Richness and diversity
The unique relationship between land and ocean has resulted in the creation of
diverse habitats in coastal zones with lots of wildlife.

These include:

Seabed Coral reefs

Estuaries and deltas Seagrasses

Mangroves and salt marshes

People and the
coast
People have lived by the coast for thousands of years and
millions of people travel to coastal areas for holidays. Many
come to see the unique habitats and the huge diversity of
wildlife.

Wherever people live or if they visit a place, such as the coast,

we can do things that help or hurt the habitats and animals that
live there.

do?
Mitigation Measures and
Adaptation Measures
Mitigation Measures
Seawalls and Revetments

Structures built parallel to the coast to protect the shore from

wave action.

Beach Nourishment

Adding sand or sediment to beaches to replace what has been

lost to erosion.
Mitigation Measures
Geotextiles and Sandbags
Synthetic fabrics and bags filled with sand used to stabilize
the shoreline.

Vegetation Planting

Planting vegetation, such as mangroves or grasses, to

stabilize the soil.

Zoning and Land-Use Regulations

Implementing policies to control development in erosion-

prone areas.
Coastal Defense Structures
By having seawalls and breakwaters, it is important since it is
constructed to protect the shore from wave action and prevent
further erosion and that they also reduce the energy of incoming
waves.

Adaptation
Mangrove Reforestation
Mangrove reforestation involves planting and nurturing mangrove trees
in coastal areas to stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and provide habitats for

Measures
diverse marine and terrestrial species. This protects shorelines but also
enhances biodiversity, improves water quality, and sequesters carbon.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)

Coordinated approach to managing coastal resources and activities

sustainably.
Zoning Regulations
involve designating specific areas for various types of development
and activities, restricting construction and industrial activities in
vulnerable coastal zones to prevent erosion and protect ecosystems.

Adaptation
Measures
Vegetative Buffers
Involves planting native vegetation such as grasses, shrubs, and trees along
coastlines to absorb wave energy, trap sediments, and stabilize the soil,
thereby reducing erosion. This provides habitat for wildlife, enhance
biodiversity, and improve water quality by filtering pollutants.
