 the Tamaraw has suffered from heavy hunting and continued habitat

destruction during the last century. The species has gradually been confined within the
mountainous interior of the island. Its population has shrunk from 10 000 in 1900 to no
more than 400 animals nowadays.
 Population of the Philippine tarsier is decreasing. Habitat loss and illegal pet trade are
the main threats. After the Presidential Proclamation from 1997 the Philippine tarsier
(Tarsius syrichta) is specially protected faunal species of the Philippines.
 In the Philippines, dugongs are found in various regions, including Palawan and parts of
the Visayas, where they are an integral part of the local marine environment. Despite
their ecological importance, these marine mammals face the threat of extinction.
 Unfortunately, despite the conservation declaration, pawikans continue to be classified
as either a vulnerable or endangered species. The declining pawikan population can be
attributed to a range of threats, including pollution, habitat destruction, and most
commonly found in Zambales—the aggressive poaching of eggs.
 The Philippine Eagle is one of the largest eagles in the world. Endemic to the
Philippines, the species is Critically Endangered with over half the remaining nesting
pairs found in unprotected forest on Mindanao Island.
 Can you tell me what is the
condition of these
organisms/animals in the ecosystem
they belong?
 What can we do to protect them or
save them?
Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem
Ecosystem Conservation
 Human activities disturb and destroy biodiversity and the natural balance
of the ecosystem. Most of these activities alter the structure and
functions of both living and nonliving components of the ecosystem.
Some of mans trade activities disrupt the interrelationship in the
ecosystem.
Strategies in protecting and conserving
Ecosystem
 Soil Conservation  Water Conservation

- Soil conservation helps restore the nutrients of the - One of the most essential needs of humans, plants,
soil and animals is clean fresh water.
- This will make the plants and other organisms live - Water supply in the reservoir could be increased
and grow through an effective watershed management.
- Soil conservation involves employing agricultural soil - Wise used of water is also important for water
management methods conservation.

Rainforest

 Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet

for their role in absorbing;

increasing
local humidity.
carbon dioxide

greenhouse gas
Rainforest

 Rainforests also stabilize climate, house incredible amounts

of plants and wildlife, and produce nourishing rainfall
around the planet.
Rainforest

 Rainforests are the source of medicines and food; support

tribal people; and are an interesting place to visit.
Coral Reefs

 Coral ecosystems are a source of food for millions;

 protect coastlines from storms and erosion;
 provide habitat, spawning, and nursery grounds for
important fish species;
 provide jobs and income to local fishers, recreation, and
tourism.
Mangroves

 Mangroves are the first line of defense for coastal

communities.
 They stabilize shorelines by slowing erosion and provide
natural barriers protecting coastal communities from
increased natural calamities or disasters.
Mangroves

 Mangrove swamps are home to a large variety of fish, crab,

shrimp, and mollusk species.

 Can you tell me How tropical
rainforest, coral reefs, and
mangroves are important in our
ecosystem?
 Today, tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps are
disappearing from the face of the globe.
 Despite the growing international concern, these are continuing to
be destroyed. These destructions have a global impact through
species extinction and the loss of important ecosystem services and
resources.
Here are some ways of protecting and conserving ecosystem
1. Habitat Restoration
 Restoring habitats helps protect biodiversity by providing essential
resources and suitable conditions for diverse organisms to thrive. This, in
turn, ensures the stability and resilience of ecosystems and their species.
Here are some ways of protecting and conserving ecosystem
2. Reforestation or replanting a forest
 Is the practice of restoring previously existing forests and woodlands that
have been destroyed or damaged.
Here are some ways of protecting and conserving ecosystem
3. Mangrove Rehabilitation
 Is the regeneration of mangrove forest ecosystems in areas where they have
previously existed.
Here are some ways of protecting and conserving ecosystem
4. Wildlife Conservation
 Which includes protecting a sanctuary where animals live.
Here are some ways of protecting and conserving ecosystem
5. Supporting projects of the government and non-
government organizations
 that protect the tropical rainforest, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps.
Here are some ways of protecting and conserving ecosystem
6. Joining organizations
 that conduct educational campaigns and give information on how to protect and
conserve it.
 Being responsible to the development and restoration of Earth’s resources like
the tropical rain forests, mangrove swamps and coral reefs are key for the long-
term benefits to mankind.
 How can you protect and conserve
tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and
mangroves?
Family feud

 Now we will have an activity. The name of the

activity is “Family Feud”. The class will be divided
into two groups (boys & girls) each group will
choose 3 representatives to participate in the quiz
show. The group with the highest points wins the
game.
 How can we protect and conserve
rainforests, coral reefs, and
mangroves?
 Why do we need to protect them?
 How can we help in our own way to
protect and conserve them?
Write PC if the following statement shows protecting and conserving tropical
rainforest, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps, and write N if not.

_________1. Replanting trees in the forest.

_________2. Striking or touching a coral reef.
_________3. Participating in local coastal cleanups.
_________4. Clearing mangroves for property development.
_________5. Establishing Park for recreation.
