UNDERSTANDING THE ENVIRONMENT

 Indoors / Outdoors

 Water-Drip / Rain / Hose / Submersion / Ice

 Dust -Settling, Circulating, or Windblown Dust

 Corrosive Liquids / Oil / Noncorrosive Liquids

 Hazardous Location-Gas / Combustible Dust

DEFINITIONS

• Drip tight - Falling dirt or moisture will not enter the

enclosure
• Dust tight - Circulating or airborne dust will not enter the
enclosure
• Rain proof - Exposure to beating rain will not interfere with
the operation of the apparatus or result in wetting of live parts
and wiring within the enclosure
• Rain tight - Exposure to beating rain will not result in
entrance of water
• Water tight - Water will not enter enclosure when subjected to
a stream of water
ENCLOSURES

• An electrical enclosure is a cabinet for electrical or

electronic equipment to mount switches, knobs and displays
and to prevent electrical shock to equipment users and protect
the contents from the environment.

• Provide A Degree Of Protection To Personnel Against

Incidental Contact With The Enclosed Equipment
STANDARDS

• In the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers

Association (NEMA) publishes NEMA enclosure
typesstandards for the performance of various classes of
electrical enclosures. The NEMA standards cover corrosion
resistance, ability to protect from rain and submersion, etc.

• For IEC member countries, standard IEC 60529 is classifying

the ingress protection rating (IP Codes) of enclosures.
MATERIALS

• Electrical enclosures are usually made from rigid plastics,

metals, particularly stainless steel, carbon steel, and
aluminium.

• Steel cabinets may be painted or galvanized. Mass-produced

equipment will generally have a customized enclosure, but
standardized enclosures are made for custom-built or small
production runs of equipment.

DEGREES OF PROTECTION

• Equipment has to fulfil its functional requirement and only

that is not enough. The equipment has also to be protected
against possible external influences and the equipment may
not be harmful to the user or operator or to the environment,
To support the easy use of understanding between user and
manufacturer this requirement IEC60529 is made.
WHAT IS IP?

• The acronym IP means many things in different contexts. To

some it is Internet Protocol, to others it is Intellectual Property.
But in this document, IP refers to Ingress Protection, meaning
protection from the environment.

• The International Electrotechnical Commission or IEC

provides Ingress Protection (IP) ratings that are used to
determine the degree of protection provided by an electrical
enclosure
WHY INGRESS PROTECTION?

• Since the IEC is an international standards organization, IP

ratings have global application for lighting luminaire
enclosures.

• Global acceptance of IP rated luminaires ensures

straightforward communication of enclosure ratings,
facilitating specification on a worldwide scale.
WHAT ARE IP RATINGS?

• IP ratings designate the degree of protection an enclosure

provides against the ingress or intrusion of foreign objects.

• IP ratings consist of the letters “IP” followed by two numbers.

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS REPRESENT?

• IP6X - The first number designates protection against solid

objects.

• IPX8 - The second number designates protection against

water.
WHAT RATING DO I NEED?

• A rating of IP54 or greater will give you protection against the

elements for your outdoor security equipment, as long as they
are not submersed in water. All SVAT outdoor cameras have a
rating of at least IP54. Most of our professional cameras are
rated IP65, providing complete protection against dust and
protection against jets of water from all directions.
