MEANING OF PHILOSOPHY
• The word philosophy literally means love of wisdom; It is derived from two Greek words i.e.
'phileo' (love) and 'Sophia' (wisdom). A love of wisdom is the essence for any philosophical
investigation.
• The philosopher who loves the truth and wisdom
- Philosophy is the process of seeking the truth by exploring the nature and source of truth
logically, critically, rationally and speculatively. The tool used to search for truth is reason which
is the main source of thinking. Thus, philosophical truth is the
truth of rational, logical, systematic, critical, radical and universal thinking.
- There are different fields of philosophy such as educational philosophy, social philosophy,
political
philosophy, economic philosophy etc.
John Dewey:
Educational philosophy is the formation of fundamental basic abilities both
regarding intellectual thinking power and emotional feeling power towards
human nature
Thompson:
Educational philosophy is an educational theory or ideology that arises from the philosophical
nature of an educator, from his experiences in education and life from his study of various sciences
related to education, and based on this, educators can find out how schools are developing.

Ki Hajar Dewantara defines education itself as an effort to guide all the natural or basic
strengths that exist in children as individuals and as members of society

Republic of Indonesia is to make the nation's life more intelligent
Pasal 3 UU No. 20 Tahun 2003 tujuan pendidikan nasional yaitu sebagai wadah
mengembangkan potensi peserta didik agar menjadi manusia yang beriman dan bertakwa
kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, berakhlak mulia, sehat, berilmu, cakap, kreatif, mendiri, dan
menjadi warga negara yang demokratis serta bertanggung jawab.
Article 3 Law No. 20 of 2003, national education aims to act as a forum for developing the
potential of students to become human beings who have faith and are devoted to God Almighty,
have noble character, are healthy, knowledgeable, capable, creative, independent, and become
democratic and responsible citizens.
