This lesson will help you gain knowledge
in solving problems involving the
divisibility rules for 2, 5, and 10 to find
common factors of numbers.
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. list down factors of numbers divisible by 2, 5, and 10;
2. use divisibility rules for 2, 5, and 10 to find common
factors of numbers; and
3. appreciate the use of divisibility rules to find common

Divisibility Rules for 2, 5, and 10
When is a number divisible by 2?

A number is divisible by 2 if it is even, or

ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.
Why is 20 divisible by 2?

20 is an even number because it ends

in 0. So, 20 is divisible by 2.
Study the table below. Find out why the given numbers are
divisible by 2, 5 or 10.
Knowing the divisibility rules for 2, 5, and
10 will help you find the factors of a
number just by examining its ones digit.
How do we know if a
number is divisible by 2, 5
or 10?
Divisibility Rule for 2
A number is divisible by 2 if the ones digit
of the number is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.
Example 1: 436 is divisible by 2 because its
ones digit is 6.
Divisibility Rule for 5
A number is divisible by 5 if the ones
digit of the number is 0 or 5.
Example 2: 225 is divisible by 5
because its ones digit is 5.
Divisibility Rule for 10
A number is divisible by 10 if the ones digit of the number
is 0. Example 3: 720 is divisible by 10 because the ones
digit is 0. Now, using the divisibility rules for 2, 5 and 10, let
us find the common factors
of 20 and 40.
Factors of 20:

20 ÷ 1 = 20
20 ÷ 2 = 10
(20 is divisible by 2 because it is even.)
20 ÷ 5 = 4
(20 is divisible by 5 because it ends in 0.)
Therefore, the factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20.
Factors of 40:

40 ÷ 1 = 40
40 ÷ 2 = 20
(40 is divisible by 2 because it is even.)
40 ÷ 5 = 8
(40 is divisible by 5 because it ends in 0.)
40 ÷10 = 4
(40 is divisible by 10 because it ends in 0.)
Therefore, the factors of 40 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20, and 40.
Therefore, the common factors of 20 and
40 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20.
Identify mentally whether or not each larger number
is divisible by the smaller number. Write “Yes” if the
number is divisible, and “No” if it is not. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.
Use the divisibility rules for 2, 5 and 10 to list down all the factors of
each pair of numbers. Then, encircle the common factors. Use a
separate sheet to do this.
1) 15 and 45
2) 50 and 80
3) 54 and 60
4) 26 and 18
5) 32 and 12

The grade five pupils were given 100 pieces of popsicle
sticks each group by Mr. Robles. Each group was assigned
to group these popsicle sticks into groups of 2, 5 and 10.
Each group member counted them one by one but it took
them so long. Is there any easy way for the pupils to find
if it is possible?
1. How many popsicle sticks were given to each
group?
2. What does the problem ask?
3. How will you find the answer to the
question?
Each group of the class was given 100 pieces
of popsicle sticks and was asked to group
them into groups of 2, 5 and 10. How will you
know if it is possible to group these sticks by
2, 5 and 10?
You have to divide 100 by 2 to find out
how many groups of 2 can be formed
out from the given 100 pieces of
popsicle sticks.
Therefore, there are 50 groups of popsicle sticks
when it is grouped by two’s.
In this case, a number is divisible by 2 if it is
an even number. Note that even numbers
always end in 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8. For example,
14; 176; 658; 272; 650 and the like, are all
divisible by 2.
Since you discovered that 100 is divisible by
2 using divisibility rule, is it also divisible by
5?

By simply looking at the given number, you

will notice that 100 ends in zero (0).
Divisibility rule of 5 says that any number
ending in 5 and 0 is divisible by 5.

For example, 225; 490; 1,085; 32,470 and

the like, are all divisible by 5. To prove it,
refer to the illustration.
Lastly, can 100 be divided by 10?
According to the divisibility rule of 10, any number
ending in 0 can be divided by 10. For example, 7 0;
580; 2,060, and the like, are fairly divisible by 10.
Write Yes if the number is divisible by the number inside
the parenthesis if not, write NO.
Check appropriate column/s as to which divisor it can possibly
be divided by. Multiple answers apply.

Divisibility Rules for 3, 6, and 9

A number is divisible by another number

if there is no remainder.
Study the table below. Find out why the given numbers are
divisible by 3, 6 or 9.
Knowing the divisibility rules for 3, 6
and 9 will help you find the factors of a
number just by examining the sum of
all its digits.
How do we know if a number is divisible by 3, 6 or 9? Here is how:
• Divisibility Rule for 3

A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of all its

digits is divisible by 3. Example 1: 540 is divisible
by 3 because 5 + 4 + 0 = 9, and 9 is divisible by 3.
To check, 540 divided by 3 is 180.
* Divisibility Rule for 6
A number is divisible by 6 if the number is divisible by both
2 and 3. Example 2: 822 is an even number, hence it is
divisible by 2. Likewise, 822 is divisible by 3 because 8 + 2 +
2 = 12, and 12 is divisible by 3. Therefore, 822 is divisible
by 6 since it is divisible by both 2 and 3.
• Divisibility Rule for 9

A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of all its digits is

divisible by 9 or a multiple of 9.

Example 3: 8253 is divisible by 9 because 8 + 2 + 5 + 3 = 18,

and 18 is divisible or a multiple of 9. Now, using the
divisibility rules for 3, 6 and 9, let us find the common
factors of 36 and 54.
STEP 1: Let us try if 36 and 54 are both divisible by 3, 6,
and 9.

Divisible by 3;
3+6=9
9 is a multiple of 3. Therefore, 36 is divisible by 3.
5+4=9
9 is a multiple of 3. Therefore, 54 is divisible by 3.
Divisible by 6;
36 and 54 are even numbers. Therefore, 36 and 54 are
both divisible by 2.
The sums of the digits of 36 and 54 are multiples of 3. So,
both are divisible by 3. Therefore, 36 and 54 are both
divisible by 6.
Divisible by 9;
3+6=9
9 is a multiple of 9. Therefore, 36 is divisible by 9.
5 +4 = 9
9 is a multiple of 9. Therefore, 54 is divisible by 9.
STEP 2: Get the factors of 36 and 54.
To get the factors of 36, divide 36 by 3, 6, and 9.
The divisor, quotient, 1, and the number itself
are the factors.
36 ÷ 3 = 12
36 ÷ 6 = 6
36 ÷ 9 = 4
So, the factors of 36 are 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, and 36.
To get the factors of 54, divide 54 by 3, 6, and 9. The
divisor, quotient, 1, and the number itself are the factors.
54 ÷ 3 = 18
54 ÷ 6 = 9
54 ÷ 9 = 6
So, the factors of 54 are 1, 3, 6, 9, 18, and 54.
The common Factors of 36 and 54 are 1, 3, 6, and 9.
Directions: Identify mentally whether or not
each larger number is divisible by the smaller
number. Write “Yes” if the number is divisible,
and “No” if it is not. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.
1) Is 213 divisible by 3? 2) Is 918 divisible by 9?
3) Is 519 divisible by 6? 4) Is 718 divisible by 6?
5) Is 137 divisible by 3? 6) Is 849 divisible by 9?
7) Is 504 divisible by 6? 8) Is 354 divisible by 6?
9) Is 369 divisible by 3? 10) Is 9864 divisible by 9?
Use the divisibility rules for 3, 6 and 9. Write
YES if the numbers have the common factors
of 3, 6, or 9 and NO if it is not. Write your
answer in your notebook.
1. Is 3 a common factor of 12 and 36?

5. 8 + 11 + 2 = 𝑁
This lesson will help you gain knowledge
in solving problems involving the
divisibility rules for 3, 6, and 9 to find
common factors of numbers.
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. list down factors of numbers divisible by 3, 6, and 9;
2. use divisibility rules for 3, 6, and 9 to find common
factors of numbers; and
3. appreciate the use of divisibility rules to find common
factors of numbers.
The student council is setting up the covered court for a
General PTA Meeting. There is a total of 810 monobloc
chairs which they have to set up in rows of 3, 6 or 9
whichever is possible. If you were one of those who have
to set up the covered court, how would you arrange the
chairs? Would you make rows of 3’s, 6’s or 9’s? Is there an
easier way?
You can easily determine whether the
given number can be grouped into 3’s,
6’s or 9’s using the divisibility rules.
A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the
digits is a multiple of 3’s.

Let us examine the digits used in the

situation given. There are 810 monoblock
chairs.
The sum of the digits of 810 is 9; and nine (9) is a
multiple of 3’s. Therefore, 810 is divisible by 3.
The term ‘multiple of 3’s is the same as skip
counting by 3 such as 3; 6; 9; 12; 15; 18; 21;
24; 27; 30 and so on. Moreover, 711; 1,014;
51,267; 525,195 and 897,264 are some of the
large numbers that are divisible by 3.
Likewise, divisibility rule of 9 goes somewhat the same.
You will easily identify if the number is divisible by 9 if the
sum of the digits is a multiple or divisible by 9. Multiple of
9’s are 9; 18; 27; 36; 45; 54; 63; 72; 81 and so on.
Similarly, large numbers such as 108; 458; 5,698;
484,857; as well as 8,991,765 are divisible by 9.
The sum of 8 + 1 + 0 is 9. Look, 9 ÷ 9 is equal to 1.
Therefore, 810 is divisible by 9.

Another example is 1,854.

18 is a multiple of 9’s. Therefore, 1,854 is divisible by 9’s. On the
other hand, divisibility rule of 6 is when the number is divisible by
2, and the sum of the digits is divisible by 3 at the same time.

For example, 810 is an even number, by simply looking at the

number, it is divisible by 2. Moreover, the sum of the digits of 810
is 9 which is divisible by 3.
You will notice that 810 is both divisible by 2 and 3, therefore it is
divisible by 6.
Let’s try another example. 1,854 is an even number, so it is
divisible by 2. On the other hand, the sum of the digits 1, 8, 5 and
4 is 18; and 18 is divisible by 3.
In this case, 1,854 is both divisible by 2 and 3, so it is divisible by 6. That’s cool!
Now let’s get back to the questions presented in the situation. If you were one
of those who have to set up the covered court, how would you arrange the
chairs? Would you try to make rows of 3’s, 6’s or 9’s? You can possibly arrange
the chairs by 3’s, 6’s or 9’s depending on the number of chairs.
Is there an easier way?
Yes, there is! With the use of divisibility rules for
3, 6 and 9, you can arrange the chairs without
spending too much time on it. I guess it would
be helpful for others, too.
Put a check (✓) on the space provided if the digit is
divisible by the divisor where it is enlisted; and put a
cross(x) if it is not.
