“The State shall endeavor to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code
throughout the territory of India.”

We do have uniform law in civil and criminal but not in personal laws.
SHAH BANO CASE

Shah Bano’s case was considered a milestone as it was a big step ahead of the general practice of
deciding cases based on the interpretation of personal law, and this case also highlighted the
need to implement the Uniform Civil Code under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.
