Problem
Energy Overview
• Kenya has an installed electricity capacity of 3,321MW.
• 81% of Kenya’s electricity generation come from renewable sources.
• Commitment to reach 100% clean energy by 2030.
• Kenya’s ascendancy as a leader in clean energy on the African continent.
• Average residential electricity rate is about 22 cents.
• Responsible for just 0.55% of cumulative emissions since 1850
• Home to the largest wind farm on the African continent
• Eighth largest geothermal producer.
• lowest cost developers of geothermal power in the world

.
• Renewable Energy Corporation mandate has been to accelerate the pace of rural electrification
across Kenya
• Long-term goals of developing nuclear power
• Third of Kenya’s installed capacity is owned and operated by IPPs.

Roadmap
Total Budget Allocation:
• Overall 35% of the entire budget is given, that is $1,079,628,806.
• The budget allocation is balanced to ensure effective implementation of Kenya's 10-year energy
development roadmap
• With periodic reviews and adjustments for goals and timelines, and external funding secured.

Outcomes
• Increase the RES generation potential from 9% to thrice within 2034.
• Excess power can be:
1) Sold to neighbouring countries, boosting the economy.
Transmitted to areas where:
1) Generation potential is too low
2) No access to electricity or even to urban area
• Kenya will lead Africa as a powerhouse by 2035 if further investments and efforts are made.
• Percentage could rise to 28.74 from 19.6% by 2034
• Reduce the transmission and distribution loss of approximately 1.56 thousand GWh/year, enough to
power 1.3 million households annually.
• Kenya will lead Africa as a powerhouse by 2035 if further investments and efforts are made.

Solutions
Cooking Fuel Scenario
Current Scenario:
1. Kenya mainly uses LPG for clean cooking.
2. Only 23.9% of the population can access clean cooking fuel.
3. Kenya still heavily rely on collecting firewood for cooking.

Current Policies:
1. The National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) 2018-2022,
which sets a target of 100% clean cooking access by 2040.
Drawbacks: Lack of specificity in targets, overreliance on subsidies.

2. The Clean Cooking Access Strategy (CCAS) 2019-2023, aims to

reach NCCAP goals via subsidies, awareness campaigns, and market
development for clean cookstoves and fuels.
Drawbacks: expensive clean cookstoves and fuels, limited awareness of
their benefits, and an underdeveloped clean cooking market
Cooking Fuel Scenario
The most common type of stove used in Kenya is the Kenya Ceramic
Jiko (KCJ). It is a charcoal-burning stove, the KCJ is made of ceramic
and metal, and it has a unique hourglass shape
Best alternative:
Rocket stoves, with their combustion chamber and chimney, enhance Kenya Ceramic Jiko

various materials like bricks, clay, and metal.
Features Rocket stove KCJ stove

Emissions Very Low Low
Cost Low (10 USD) Medium (20 USD)

Cooking Fuel Scenario Fixed dome with built-in gas

The most suitable type of biomass and biogas

plant for Kenya considering budget, eco-
friendliness, and low maintenance is a fixed
dome biogas plant using agricultural residues
or forestry residues.
Consideration:
Fixed dome biogas plants: Low maintenance, 20+ year lifespan.
Underground: Weather-resistant, maintains stable temperatures for
biology.
Space-efficient: Compact design suits small areas, ideal for rural homes.
Affordable: Cost-effective for low-income households and
communities.
