Extreme adjectives

They are NOT used in the comparative form, so thay are also called “non-gradable”: they don’t
have levels of degree of the quality they describe.
Examples:
furious (is the same as very angry)
miserable (very sad)
Long : endless
Big:huge/enormous
Interesting: fascinating
Hot: boiling
Cold: freezing
Intensifiers: they modify adjectives.

 Modifiers that can be used with “gradable” adjectives, that is, adjectives we
can use in comparative form:
 1- Very – extremeley – really – particularly – terribly
 2- quite- pretty – fairly – rather
 3- a bit

Examples:
I felt terribly upset when I heard the news.
He drives rather fast.
Her story was a bit silly.
Intensifiers and NON-gradable adjectives
( “extreme” adjectives)
 These are: absolutely, really, completely.
 Examples:
 The special effects were absolutely amazing.

 Watch out! The intensifier “quite” has 2 meanings:


 1- with gradable adjectives : “good but not very good” Ex. The picture was
quite good.
 2- with non-gradable adjectives: “very, very good” Ex. Her cooking was quite
wonderful!
Some adverbs can be used to emphasize
both adjectives and adverbs
 These are: just, completely, totally
 Examples:
 You look just fantastic!
 It’s completely imposible to do that in 5 minutes.
 I completely forgot about your birthday. (also: I clean forgot)
