INTRODUCTION

Furniture industry has been one of the most importance sectors of the economy due to its significance in bringing about
economic growth and substantial development this have been found in western world like Germany(with a revenue of $18.2
Billion USD), Poland(with a revenue of $11.9 Billion USD), Italy(with a revenue of $14.4 Billion USD) among others, and
also Chine($93.4 Billion USD) and Vietnam making the top list as an Asian country.(Wee, 2017).
Chattel have been an importance part of furniture that provide accessibility in terms of movability, of which a foldable
picnic table provides, coupled with it’s portability, its undeniable satisfaction and comfort its provide to humanity is worth
considering.
According to Romania news, furniture market globally is a huge market which is estimated to be about $360 billion
markets, with the most prominent players been the United states and China market., while Nigeria furniture industry is
worth an estimation of #70 Billion, with an annual growth rate of about 2.25%.(Johnson, 2020). This industry on its one has
been a lot of benefit, apart from the nation effect in terms of revenue but also in terms of job provision, opportunity it’s
provide, alongside beauty and satisfaction it’s provide to it’s users. This industry product is one that can not but always be
put to use, ranging from the household, work-area use etc commercial purpose among others.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

Furniture been a very important product and with the address of space, portability, in view, there are very
limited design that address this problem, despite the various invention and modification in design, alongside
increase in manufacturing companies, over the years. Although materials other than wood, metals and alloys
have been developed and use due to their toughness, and light weight, due to cost value, but still some of the
designs have been narrowed to server certain function and activities. In addition most design lack multi-
purpose and infrequent use for various purpose and activities. In view of this a design of a foldable picnic
which addresses space, portability, comfort, was been consider alongside cost efficiency, so that comfort can
be at maximized while in use for purpose like picnic, with this approach, furniture will not just provide
satisfaction but also be accessible, in term of be foldable and portable.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE

The major aim of this project is to design and fabricate a foldable picnic table, with affordable, light material, and
wood is the selected material.
The objective of this project are:
• Designing a simple and workable mechanism for a foldable picnic table
• Use of light material to make it portable
• Use of available and cost effective material
• Design a product that can also be use as bench
• Also have a design that can optimize the use of space, packable
• Use of simple mechanism to prevent sophisticated motion and working principle.
• The design should be suitable to convert to a bench
• The design should be handy
LITERATURE REVIEW

Historic reports place the appearance of folding furniture back to 15th-13th BC. (Tachmatzidou, folding furniture: from design to production,
07-2019). Research papers, studies and books have been written about folding principles (greevenbroek, 2018), design methods ( (jackson,
2011), materials (wagner, 2018), and mechanisms (maziar asefi, n.D.), In order to have reference points to understand and develop the best
possible design solution.

Around 1904 C.H.Nielsen patent a table capable of being cheaply made, which is portable and equipped with seats, preferably on both sides,
particularly designed and adapted for use in picnics and other gatherings of similar character where temporary use only is required” ,one of
his drawing showed a collapsed table nearly as its distant counterpart, the 19 th century picnic blanket.

Modern design has been over the refinement of picnic table was eliminate the redundant structural supports. Around 1918 Harold R. Basford
patented the first drawing of the picnic table we know it today,(patent journal), having address the structural support in previous design, in his
design, and also his design is foldable which is shown below

Although Nielsen’s and Basford’s patents established the basic design principles, but they did not include measurements (place journal). The
national park service’s table for public auto camp (1922), first lay out dimensions of a picnic table, which including 2*4 and 2*6 for the
frame and 2*12 for the table and seats (place journal).
METHODOLOGY

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
THE DESIGN CONSIDERATION OF THE PICNIC TABLE:
• THE EASE OF FABRICATION OF COMPONENT PARTS
• THE SAFETY OF THE USERS
• A SIMPLE FOLDABLE MECHANISM
• THE AVAILABILITY OF MATERIAL LOCALLY
• THE COST OF MATERIALS
METHODOLOGY

A proposed design form the project

METHODOLOGY

The picnic table was designed and fabricated is to serve the functionality of a picnic table
alongside, making it portable, lightweight, transportable, and easy foldable. The model
contains of the following major components;
• Table top and frame
• Sit
• Link
• Sit-support
METHODOLOGY
EQUIPMENTS
The equipment use during the fabrication of picnic table includes:
Electric Table saw machine, Welding machine (Arc welding)
Hand saw, Hammer,
Grinder Machine (Cutting Disk),Drilling machine

RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendations are hereby made for future modification work on the foldable
picnic table.
• A simple hydraulic can be coupled to leg of stand to enhance the performance and also stability .
• Further design improvement can be made to the furniture to make it easier to move from one
place to another, like simple roller.
• Improve material which has the ability to withstand harsh weather condition and high strength.
CONCLUSION

The Foldable picnic table was designed and fabricated using available locally sourced materials
which leads to reduction in the price of the furniture and was found to be satisfactory.
• The design calculation results showed that the furniture isn able to be able top serve it’s purpose
in term of comfort, accessibility, portability, using local material
• Solidworks 2019 software have been used for the design drawings and Ansys for the simulation
of the design analysis. The materials used majorly were ply-wood and mild-steel.
