Noun + of

- I’m studying at the University of London.


When we are talking about things or people in
general, we do not use THE.

1. Children are very good at learning languages.


2. Sugar isn’t good for you.
3. I like working with people.
But when we are talking about specific people or
things, we use THE.

1. The children in my school are very good at languages.


2. The sugar isn’t good. It’s been here for ages.
3. I like the people I work with.
We don’t use THE with TELEVISION (or TV), but we
use THE with radio.

1. He watched TV the whole afternoon.


2. I’ve seen it on TV.

BUT
I like to listen to the radio in the morning.
We don’t use THE with meals (BREAKFAST, LUNCH,
DINNER).

1. Dinner is ready.
2. What time did you have breakfast?
We don’t use THE before Noun + Number.

1. The train arrives at Platform 2.


2. He is in Room 15.
3. Have you got these shoes in size 43?
4. Read page 29.
We don’t use THE with SCHOOL, PRISION, HOSPITAL,
UNIVERSITY if we talk bout them as a service and not as a
place or building.

Compare:
1. Anna goes to school at 8. She is at school now.
(Ann is a pupil)

2. Ann’s mother wanted to speak to her daughter’s


teachers. So she went to the school to see her.
(She is not a student)
Compare:
1. Ken’s in prison for robbery.

2. Rob went to the prison to see his brother.

Compare:
3. Jack had an accident and was taken to hospital.

4. Jill has gone to the hospital to visit Jack.

Compare:
5. When I leave school I want to go to university.

6. Excuse me, where is the university?


We say GO TO WORK, BE AT WORK, and START/
FINISH work.

1. I can’t speak. I’m at work now


2. I finish work at 7.
