Counting system
The Sumerians were the first civilisation to have
developed a counting system.

It is a common belief amongst many scientists that some

of the oldest and most basic mathematical functions, such
as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division have
been used for over 4,000 years

Counting in bones
In Prehistoric times, Counting was done
by ancient people by representing check
marks on bones

Most popular bones used as scale for

counting are ISHANGO BONES

Invention of fractions
o The Egyptians used Egyptian fractions c. 1000 BC. About
4000 years ago, Egyptians divided with fractions using
slightly different methods.

presentation title 29
Invention of rational numbers
o Pythagoras is indeed an early Greek mathematician who has
been best known for inventing rational numbers. We may also
state that any percentage is indeed a rational value if the
denominators, as well as numerators, seem to be integers and
also the denominator isn’t really equivalent to zero.

presentation title 30
Invention of irrational numbers
o The discovery of irrational numbers is usually attributed to
Pythagoras, more specifically to the Pythagorean Hippasus of
Metapontum, who produced a (most likely geometrical) proof
of the irrationality of the √2
