Endocrine system is a complex
network of glands and organs that
produce and release hormones to
regulate various bodily functions.
 MAJOR ENDOCRINE GLANDS:

communication
A. describe the four classes of chemical messengers.

● Body has a remarkable capacity for maintaining homeostasis despite

having to coordinate the activities of over 75 trillion cells.
● The principal means by which this coordination occurs is through
chemical messengers.
● Some are produced by nervous system and others are produced by
Endocrine system.
 CHEMICAL
MESSENGER
● Chemical messenger allow cells to communicate with
each other to regulate body activities.
● Most of chemical messenger are produced by a specific
collection of cells or by gland
 In terms and function of chemical
messenger:
● Autocrine chemical messengers

● Paracrine chemical messengers

● Neurotransmitter

● Endocrine chemical messengers

DESCRIPTION and
EXAMPLE
AUTOCRINE- chemical messengers stimulates the cell that originally secreted
it, and sometimes nearby cells of the same types.
Ex. Eicosanoids(prostaglandins, thromboxanes, prostacylins, leukotrienes)
PARACRINE- The chemical messenger are secreted by one cell type into the
extracellular fluid and affect surrounding cells of a different types.
EX. Somatostatin, histamine, eicosanoids
NEUROTRANSMITTER- are chemical messenger secreted by neuron that activate an
adjacent cell, whether it is another neuron, a muscle cell, or glandular cell.
EX. Acetylcholine, epinephrine
ENDOCRINE- secreted into the bloodstream by certain glands and cells, which together
constitute the endocrine system.
EX. Thyroid hormones, growth hormones, insulin, epinephrine, estrogen, progesterone,
testosterone, prostaglandis.
