Tour Itinerary:
Practical Aspects

1
Lecture overview

After studying this lecture, you should be able to:

1. Understand the meaning of tour itinerary.

2. Explain the considerations of travel itinerary planning.
3. Distinguish between the types of itineraries.
4. Prepare a tour itinerary in Oman.

2
Introduction
• As previously mentioned, the package tour is a pre-arranged
combination of not fewer than two of the tourism services when sold
or offered for sale at an inclusive price and when the service covers a
period of more than 24 hours or includes some elements.
• The most common example of a tour operator's product would be
a flight plus a transfer from the airport to a hotel and the services of a
local representative, all for one price.
• Some tour wholesalers now allow tourists to customize their packages,
either by designing shorter tours and allowing travelers to combine
them together in various ways.
• According to the Package Travel Act, an organizer design and provides
packages and offers them for sale either directly or indirectly by means
of some other business, or who on his own account offers packages
organized by someone else.

3
Travel Itinerary
• An itinerary is a travel plan that consists of essential
information of the tour including the travel route, distance
and time taken to travel, transportation, any activities at a
specific place or destination to be followed by tourists during
the period of their travel.

• A travel itinerary enables a tourist to stick to the plan and to

enjoy the tour thoroughly.

• In terms of global travel, the tourists who are visiting

particular nations have to provide their itinerary to
concerned authorities to ensure that their plans are legal.
4
Travel Itinerary considerations
• It is evident that the process of preparing a travel itinerary requires
great efforts, much time, and accurate details in terms of;
 Dates,
 Times,
 Programs,
 Transfers,
 Accommodations units,
 Food and beverage services,
 Natural and cultural tourism attractions,
 Activities, amenities, ancillary services,
 Optional tours,
 Costs & discounts, etc.
• Consequently, constructing the ideal tour itinerary template might
seem like a lot of work and duties.
5
Types of Itineraries
There are 3 types of itineraries:

1. The tour itinerary: It is given to every tourist by the tour company

for which they have signed up. It has a basic outline of the tour.

2. Tour manager's itinerary: It has all details that are on the tourist's
itinerary, but it will also have some details like details of travel
arrangements, contact name, and numbers of the individuals related
to the tour plan, other tour related formalities, etc.

3. Tour Escort's itinerary: It is a detailed one giving step-by-step

information of the tour including the time taken to travel, modes of
transport taken, accommodation details, sightseeing, any required
tickets, list of other primary things to implement the tour, essential
contact name and numbers required on tour, etc.
6
How to prepare a tour itinerary?
• Tour itinerary is the blue print of travel en-route, from the beginning till end of
the tour.
• It generally consists of a brief about activities in the tour from time to time.
• It varies from company to company
