Enterobius vermicularis

 Disease: causes pinworm infection (enterobiasis).

Transmission
 Eggs are deposited on perianal folds.
 Self-infection occurs by transferring infective eggs to the mouth with hands that
have scratched the perianal area.
 Person-to-person transmission can also occur through handling of contaminated
clothes or bed linens.
 Enterobiasis may also be acquired through surfaces in the environment that are
contaminated with pinworm eggs (e.g. , curtains, carpeting).
pathogenesis
 Perianal pruritus is the most prominent symptom.
Pruritus is thought to be an allergic reaction to the presence
of either the adult female
or the eggs.

 Scratching predisposes to
secondary bacterial
infection.
Laboratory Diagnosis
 1. Sample: Scotch tape technique

are not found in the stools
The sample should be taking morning.
Laboratory Diagnosis
 Detection of eggs are recovered from perianal skin .

 whitish adult worms can be found in the stools or near


the anus of diapered children.

 No serologic tests are available.
