GLAZING

Section T in SMM2
Section T in SMM2
Glazing works….
• Glass has been adapted to reduce both heat loss and noise with
double and triple glazed units.

• Laminated and toughened glass offers greater safety than ordinary

sheet and float glass.

• There are also numerous materials for fixing of glass to frames.

– Nailed to frames
– Modern sealants
– Mastic tape

TYPES OF GLASS
Clear Sheet Glass

• Sheet glass because of the nature of its

nature of its manufacture, never has
two surfaces perfectly parallel or flat, it
thus distorts transmitted and reflected
light.
• Manufactured in thickness of 2,3,4,5
and 6 ( unit in mm )
• superseded by float glass
• Cutting : no special equipment;
normal glass glazing cutter
• Used in : door, window.
Float Glass
• Truly flat glass, giving undistorted vision.
• Formed by floating a continuous ribbon
of molten glass onto liquid metal at a
controlled rate and temperature.
• Thickness : 3mm~12mm
Polished Plate Glass

• Required grinding and polishing

• Generally superseded by float glass
which has the same qualities at reduced
cost.
• Thickness: 5~12mm; can be
manufactured up to 38mm thick.
Patterned Glass
• Is a rolled glass.
• During manufacture a pattern in
formed on one face of the glass while
the other face is left flat.
• Thickness: 3~5mm
Laminated Glass
• Consists of a sandwich construction of
two or more sheets or ordinary glass,
between which are bonded
interlayer(s) made of resilient plastic
material.
• Usually used - bank, skylight, airplane.
• Thickness: 4~8mm
Toughened Glass
• Heat-treating clear, patterned and
other types of glass (wired glass cannot
be treated in this manner).
• Thickness: 4~10mm
Wired Glass
• Has wired mesh incorporated during
the rolling process.
• May have a cast finish or be
subsequently polished.
• 6~7mmm
